Strange wording in that newsletter you posted a link to.
"All buildings for the western ticket hall on Dean Street have been brought down to ground level by Crossrail's contractor. The focus is now on the remaining basement and foundation structures."

Put simply,” The western ticket hall site at Dean Street has had existing buildings removed by demolition contractors. Basement structures are now being cleared".

Seems a lot of space being used above ground for the new "undergound" station at Tottenham Court Road.
I prefer underground stations as at Piccadilly where you just have steps from the pavement and the station is underground, with the platforms at a lower level.
Still as it is also going to be a Crossrail station maybe that makes a difference. Giving it the grandeur of a mainline type station.

The "Brand New Road" is not actually a brand new road at all, it has been there since Centrepoint was constructed back in the sixties, it has been dug up, relaid, and renamed but its not really a New Road, its just the top end of St Giles High Street with a name change.

"Charring Cross Road"?! What a mess!

I think DG is referring to the part of the new road linking Char X Rd with St Giles High St. It is where Denmark Place - a narrow pedestrian passage - was.

It is probably worth noting that the roads around CenterPoint were built when the idea was to have the "motorways" running in tunnels which were the old (ie, current) ground level, with pedestrians moving around freely on a new "first floor" ground level.

This was when the "London Ringways" motorways system was being planned and built, and CenterPoint would have been at the centre of the central part of that system.

argh...i suspect that 8 month closure of the northern line platforms will really screw my commute, anyone coming from the southern end of the northern line who wants the central line will be more likely to switch the the victoria line at stockwell making an already busy line even busier

Eight months? Eight months!!!!

They really are having fun with Tottenham Court Road aren't they?

Denmark Place? Not there any more? That's a shame, I used to like it round there, with all the music/musical instrument shops

Here's an interesting article on why it takes so long to repair escalators:

http://www.lrb.co.uk/v24/n05/peter-campbell/why-does-it-take-so-long-to-mend-an-escalator/print

Are there any plans to provide more space on the platforms at TCR during the station redevelopment? The Central and Northern Line platforms are quite cramped during rush hour as it is, I imagine that can only get worse when transfers with Crossrail trains are included.

It is Denmark Street that has all the musical intruments shop not Denmark Place. Though I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

I stand corrected.

buggers up Tube Challenging too.

Grrrr.

Bum, I change there every day! Still, Tottenham Court Road station is hideously cramped now, so it definitely needs expanding, even without crossrail

@John (comment 1):

"Giving it the grandeur of a mainline type station."

Not really, the real reason can be summed up in two words. Retail opportunities.

@Geofftech Better get all your challenges in before April then!

Brian - I think you'll find it's spelt 'Centre Point', as it says in rather large letters on top.

(Although the other week, one of the lights was out, and it appeared to be Centre Pint)

Good grief all this had totally passed me by - makes me realise how little I go to this part of London now: my days of gig going, second hand bookshopping and music playing are clearly long over.
