This was my favourite walk when I lived in London. You have to have to pub lunch at the hunting lodge halfway through though - but don't overdo it like I did once as you'll never get over the little hills in Epping Forest.

As a little boy I remember often seeing a bus destination of "Wanstead Flats". I think it was on route 10. For years I had an image of a bus terminus located next to an enormous residential tower block in north east London.

I'm likely not the only one startled by the "poisonings" line with no further explanation who had to google it. I simply live too far away for it to have registered as news where I live. Here's a fairly helpful link.

Wanstead Flats was like being transported to proper countryside when I first visited as a child, to someone growing up in Tower Hamlets. A newlywed relative had set up home across the road from the Flats and cows could be heard lowing through the open windows on that gloriously sunny childhood afternoon when our family went along for the house-warming...

Those special childhood afternoons were always gloriously sunny...

The only 'boats' that I've ever seen on Highams Park pond are from the canoeing club.
I look forward to the second part.
