As you can see, I didn't go out on Saturday evening either.
There is no sign of the 588 on the London Vehicle Finder today. I suspect you witnessed a very rare glitch whereby there was an overlap of routes when there should not have been. I can only think of one other similar glitch but that involved a night route not starting on the Fri night / Sat morning as part of a new contract for route 10 / N10.
I wonder if the 'stationery's' error is due to a spellcheck somewhere.

My logic: 'stationerys' is incorrect as 'stationery' is plural anyway, so it was flagged up with the squiggley red line of doom... "Oh look, it's saying 'stationery's' is right, that must be what I want".
I seem to recall you reported another switchover where there was an overlap - the shuttle bus between Stratford Unintentional and Stratford Main continued in operation for some time after the DLR extension opened - apparently because the contract required it - some contingency time having been factored in, in case the DLR opened late, which turned out to be innecessary.
.....actually, now I've found the relevant date (1 Sept 2011), I see that it was mentioned in the comments for that date, rather than the blog itself.
.....the comment was made by someone calling himself Timbo............
The 588 is not running today, if you're interested.
I like the sound of Stratford Unintentional.

The 388 gets an interesting hotchpotch of buses running on it - some of them a little old, like in your pictures, but occasionally a shiny new Scania turns up. The extension looks like it'll be quite handy for people in South Hackney wanting to get to Eastfield - taking the 425 (particularly westbound) can take aeons.
Companies do specify bus types in their tenders (I found the tendered bus types on a website once - can't find it now.) Certainly there's routes near my house that have a single uniform fleet of new buses, and other bus routes that have a random hotchpotch seemingly of whatever they found at the back of the depot. About a year ago or so I ended up on a single doored Abelio V reg single decker. Goodness knows where they'd dragged that one from as the route it was on had been twin door for donkeys.
I have read elsewhere that TfL requested that the 588 ran on Saturday so it was a scheduled operation and not a glitch as I had suggested. The source for this info is very reliable!
That very long gap between the Trowbridge Estate and the Copper Box? They're working on it.
