Theydon Bois is a beautiful village and well worth a visit. When you were there on 30/3/13 you rhymed Bois with 'Noise' (which is how I've always heard it pronounced) and not 'Joyce' as you reported today.
Theydon "Boys" is how it's pronounded ...
That cricket pitch is one of the oldest in the country - except it isn't ... it's directly above the M25 tunnel.
That itself is an interesting tale of a contest between the Ministry of Roads (oops "Transport") & thr Corporation ....
The ministry wanted to bulldoze right through the forest, because they could ... except that couldn't, the Corporation took (& still takes) its guardianship of the great forest very seriously.

Ah, Ivy Chimneys.
One of Essex' best pubs is there: "The Forest Gate" - no fruit machines, no piped muzak, really good beer.
Come & see Chingford Morris dancing there, 20.00hrs on May Day, incidentally.
You were running at Betjeman-factor 9 there DG, a great read.
I was about to post the same comment re Betjeman. Another excellent post that has encouraged me to try this walk.
I've seen Theydon Boys rhymed with all sorts of things, including Joyce, Choice, Noise and Boys. Let's go with Boys, shall we?

If you do decide to do the walk, and you have more than an after-work slot to fill, the 6½ mile Oak Trail linked in the third paragraph looks rather splendid.
Now, you weren't going to see the 'other' attraction were you?

Can Bois be said to rhyme with Boys if it is actually pronounced as 'Boys'?
The Flickr links aren't working on my smartphone (Windows). I get page not found...
A few years ago I bought a car from the Renault Dealer (now gone) in Theydon Bois. The purchase was followed up by a call from their PR folk asking if I was happy with the purchase from the dealer in...'Theydon Bwa'. I see where they were coming from.
@GB - well, Renault is French!

it is interesting to note that although the Central Line only came to Essex in 1946, the section from Leyton to Loughton is in fact the oldest section of railway on the Underground network, having been opened by the Great Eastern Railway seven years before the Metropolitan Railway opened its first section.
It's a homophone with/to/for? 'boys'
