An interesting place - seen it many times from the train but never had a good nose round.

But how can back-to-back houses have back yards?
Thanks DG for your report on Bradford and Saltaire. Already thinking about a short break up there. Never heard of Saltaire before. Fascinating stuff.
If you were planning a break of any more than a day, I'd suggest basing yourself in Leeds rather than Bradford. Sorry Bradford.
Or York, perhaps?
Or Skipton? Fabulous pubs, great walking and well connected by rail to Leeds, Bradford and several other Dales towns.

I walked the Leeds-Liverpool Canal towpath earlier this year and was very impressed by what I saw of Saltaire. The mill buildings dwarf the canal yet seem to be in keeping with it. Oh for such sympathy in modern canalside building design.
really enjoyed reading this, thank you

Or Ilkley. Famous for its moor and also very accessible by train with an increasing array of great pubs and restaurants.

Love trips to Saltaire and both surprised and delighted to see it on DG.
@NLW

quite - a back-to-back pair of terraces have nothing between them except a rear party wall - the terraced houses in Saltaire have back yards, accessed from a wide alleyway.

Google Street View shows this quite well
Nice write-up and a lovely place - my brother-in-law lives there and it's a real hidden gem for a southerner.

I especially love the "living advent calendar' they do at Christmas. Might have to take a trip up there this year with the kids to try and spot them all.

Oh! So that was the reference in Doctor Who -- the gated town for Yorkshire workers was called 'Sweetville' not 'Saltaire' presided over a 'Mr Sweet'. Cool.
The Shipley Glen Tramway has recently been reopened after several years' refurb - definitely worth a little visit. Then just up the road is the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway and all that Bronte malarkey. And something about a steep high street.
The Shipley Glen Tramway looked like fun. Alas if you visit on a weekday, all you find are some carriages halfway up a lonely hill.
Good grief: we beat you there by 4 days, visitig on Saturday 2nd. You just mised an interesting contemporary textile exhibition (finished Sunday 3rd) on the top floor (which runs the entire length of the building and has an unsupported roof).
