Between Hastings and Eastbourne you say... If only I'd realised a few weeks ago when I was down on the south coast and staying in Bexhill. I managed to miss this little treasure even though I drove between Bexhill, Eastbourne, Hastings, Brighton etc.
Anyway, it looks lovely, thanks for the pics.

I agree Rye is wonderful. Battle is another good place to visit in that part of the country.

I found myself in Rye late in August after I miscalculated a tip to Dungeness.

The trip up the church tower is rather wonderful, I wasn't o keen on coming back down the ladders though.

I really should finish off writing up that trip.

When I visited last year I found an old sweet shop selling loose sweets out of a jar. I was transported back to the 70's.

People from Rye are known as "Mud Heads". No idea why.

The Ypres Castle is well worth having a drink in - a really lovely pub.

Isn't it somewhere near Saltbeefon?

Factual error alert! Between Hastings and Eastbourne? No it's not. Between Hastings and Folkestone, yes. It's east of Hastings.

dg writes: Oops, yes. I always get my Hastings muddled.

It isn't particularly quick to get to by car either. We reckon on an hour from Ruralville, as the roads wend and wind their way across the Weald and the marshes.

Did you see the new wind farm at Walland Marsh? It should be plainly visible from the train (or the bell tower), just to the north-east of Rye. I've not had a chance to see it yet - it's been put up in double quick time over the last six weeks or so.

dg writes: Yes, it's up. Best seen from the train (or maybe best not seen at all).

"she's got a ticket to Rye! and she don't care!"

(sorry. as you were.)

I used to love the Dr. Syn films - weren't they based around there?

Did you get to Camber, too? Another lovely spot.

Lovely place indeed, went down there a couple of years ago. As I child I loved the books of Malcolm Saville, several of which were set in and around Rye and it really captured my young imagination! Worth visiting Winchelsea as well if you're down that way

No "Moblogged Mystery Tour" from Rye then?

In any case, you make Rye sound like such a great place to visit for a day. I do like the sound of the sea-themed names (e.g. Mermaid Street), and the attractions that you've described. It seems like I'll have to go there myself one day, as I don't remember ever visiting there before.

Another lovely seaside resort on the south coast is Lyme Regis. I remember going there when I was a wee lad, and looking around all the fossil shops. Why go to Majorca when all this is on your doorstep, eh?

Agreed. A visit to Rye and a day out on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway were the highlights of a great family holiday a couple of years ago.

Great tour! Makes me want to visit some day, as it seems like such a forgotten treasure from the past.

Lovely photos as usual, DG. It seems like every time you take a day trip out of London, I add a new entry to my list of places to visit next time I'm in the UK.

Fantastic timing! I'm going to Camber for the weekend and Rye was on my to-do list. Church tower it is, then.

Oh yes, Rye, one of my old stomping grounds, first visited in the 60's whilst staying at Pontins at Camber Sands (Is it still there?). Went there recently again with the husband, and it hasn't changed a bit. You forgot to mention the Pottery, they do nice little jugs & vases, and there is a haberdashers in the High St.where you can buy a single button if you wish.

Brought back happy memories of teenage fishing expeditions to Rye. Thanks

Between Folkestone and Hastings, but not easy to get to even from these local landmarks. I live in Folkestone and it takes ages to get to and from Rye on the train because of changing trains that don't quite meet up. It is a lovely place though, nicer on a nice day, good pubs and nice antique places to look round. Did you not go to Henry James' house? We did, he wasn't there.
Pontins Camber Sands is still there afaik, it shows up in the listings, I only went there to the Belle and Sebastian Bowlie Weekender some years back.
