I stopped off in Winchester a couple of years ago, it's a great place to visit, though I didn't see much of the place. Hopefully you will have 'inspired' me to pop down there on one of my spring/summer days off work!

I couldn't live in the sticks in such a quiet town in the middle of nowhere, but it's nice to see how beautiful 'Middle England' can be now and again.

Once again Diamond Geezer sets the high watermark for ultimate travel blogging. Excellent... amazing... historical... mythological... photogenic... and there's even a free horn of beer and white bread.

Nice work DG, you saw all the best bits. You must have done your research... Did you have your cup of ale? Cheaper than London prices at least.

An hour's research is all it took, plus five minutes in the tourist information centre.

And yes thanks, I did get my free ale (about half a teacupful) and a scrap of white crust (thin sliced).

I knew one of the inmates - a beaufort Brother- many years ago. The flats are actually quite nice inside with a living room and bed recess, kitchen and bathroom. You know you're in a historic building but the charity does their best to make it comfortable.
