Just underneath the motorway flyover was the White Lion (the building is still there). It used to be a splendid pub, but was destroyed by a greedy pubco. Somewhere close by was another pub called the Elephant. An old timer once told me that because of the proximity of these two pubs and the Tiger, the neighbourhood was known locally as 'the jungle'. |

I've spent the last couple of years walking past Brookfield Road, and noticing the slope, without ever twigging why it was so named. |
