In the London Borough of Hounslow, in Hanworth there was a self contained purpose built library building. This has closed and the site is up for sale, but the council provided a replacement library within the swimming baths/gym complex just along also the road. Not a bad move as that building also has a large car park and a cafe.
I have only passed the site by bus, maybe I should go and look inside.
It's nice that "volunteers" have tried to step in, but nobody should have to work for free. Big society = replacing jobs with unpaid jobs. Why doesn't David Cameron give up his own salary and work for free?
"Platinum Revolver" has been incorporated at Companies House for less than two years, has no charges registered against it (perhaps it is a holding company-or perhaps they just haven't developed anything yet), has as its registered office a place in Chelsea used by many other firms (which means they are using a professional company secretarial service), and appears to have no web presence whatsoever. This does not inspire confidence.
One very different result at Friern Barnet Library from last week...

No company named "Platinum Revolver" inspires confidence.
Going back almost twenty years when we were Library Studies student in Aberystwyth , adverts in the then LA Record for jobs at the Horniman Museum Library would always make my then partner and I giggle, didn't stop him applying for one of them though.

A year later we moved to London, one of the first things we did was to join the local library - this being the to us shiny futuristic one in Willesden Green. I became acquainted with a lot of the stock as my first six months of coincided of my being on the dole, so visits to the Library were a good way of getting me out of the house. A shame that it is being knocked down.
It's interesting to see how councils in different areas have dealt with reductions in governmint handouts to them.

I think that the axing of library services in certain areas, but not in others, speaks volumes. Policies only reflect the values and ethics of the councillors of an area, after all.

Those areas where libraries have been cut least are not those whose grants have been cut least either.
