That seems to be the Napa valley of Britain. Thanks for sharing the trip.
You're not wrong about those extra steps - I think the path is deliberately designed to delude you into thinking, at almost every turn, that the summit is finally within reach. I suspect the guide dog and I made an interesting sight when we climbed Box Hill a couple of years back, him dragging me up the first flights, and me coaxing him up the final few. Watching the Olympic cycling on the Zig Zag Road was a much more pleasurable experience, even if I spent most of the time between the pelaton passing (when others may well have been scribbling on the road ) sleeping off the effect of an opening ceremony induced late night. Happy memories...

Anyway, thanks for the post, DG.
I remember the Olympic bike races well. While passing through the borough, it didn't go through Woking town centre (wouldn't have looked good on the tele...), instead going straight from West Byfleet to Ripley - us of Woking having to head to Pyrford or West Byfleet to see it. and thousands did!

The Zig Zag isn't the only road up to the NT car park, there's one up from the other side, too (up from Betchworth/Headley end), the far less excitingly named Boxhill Road. This is the road the Olympic cyclists used to go back down. It's also used by the 516 bus, which serves the top of Box Hill via a double run.
Yes, love Box Hill, been visiting for years, even before we moved down this way.

Shame about the stepping stones, but I had a feeling you'd been before, and a quick check confirmed this.

Olympic road race too, what a great day, shame our man didn't win the gold (or any medals) but impressively organised, with big screen on Donkey Green to watch the rest of the race. Excellent stuff.

Thanks for the post.
Done the walk a couple of times coming over from Polesden Lacey via Denbies to Boxhill and back again.

The 465 is of less use to walkers than it used to be, now hat it's cashless. Visitors to the area won't all have Oysters.

And I see I wasn't the only one to spot the inconsistency that Zig Zag Hill can't both be "the only road to the NT car park", and part of a "great long loop".
OH yes - Denbies was also where James May's full-size Lego house was built for his TV series "Toy Stories". sadly they didn't have space for it to be kept permanently so it had to be dismantled again, but hey, that's what Lego is all about.
It was cheering to hear the speed humps were going to be removed for the Olympic events.
Not so good to see them being put back again, afterwards.
The thing so many do-gooder road planners seem unaware of is that these wretched things are as much a pain for cyclists as anyone else.
RogerW The speed humps in Birdcage Walk were removed for the Olympics, when they were put back in they were considerably less jarring.
Just wondering if narrow flat sections can be made into the humps so cyclists can go thru without the "bump"? Maybe they designed to slow cyclists downhill too? So, maybe just on the uphill side? Not known if this been done anywhere...
