Good to have a healthy helping of DG ironic comment, it's been a while.
I've sent a link to this post to all those Facebook friends who were up in arms after watching last week's "Benefits Street". It might fly above some heads however.
Alternatives for the two higher percentile expressions (it took me a moment to parse what they meant):

x+0.5(100-x) = (x + 100)/2 i.e. the average of x and 100.

x+0.9(100-x) = (1/10)x + (9/10)100 i.e. the weighted average of x and 100, giving more weight to 100.
You mean that Albion's shore is not gripped by the scourge of middle-class welfare, as my sunburned country is, whereby those in the middle percentile get the welfare dollars in order to encourage them to breed, buy real estate and consume, while at the same time welfare is cut to those for whom it traditionally provided a welfare net?
Lol! Been reading the Daily Fail again have we?
Never mind. According to the headline on the D***y E*****s Britons are going to live eight years longer. (Which is probably good news for their circulation, too.)
The current London housing market is not a representation of the rest of the county. I have what would be described as a modest salary but I live in a nice modern 3 bed terrace literally on the edge of The Peak District which cost less than a garage would in London.(£105'000) Manchester is a train ride away and though I have a 41 mile total commute I feel I have a good quality of life.
Of cause this is no good if you need to be in London but you pay way over the odds to live there.
