Another 21st century-created occupation that the world doesn't need.

Just think how much ink and paper they'd save if they didn't write so many long and meaningless 'sustainability' reports.

And *why* do they STILL keep talking about carbon? It's carbon dioxide for goodness sake.

Sustainability is the new "world class".

BMW who don't actually have a working electric car yet? Or even a hybrid?

I thought you were being unduly cynical until "For the purposes of London 2012, zero waste is defined as ‘zero waste direct to landfill from Games-time activities’" I think there is virtually no waste which goes direct to landfill any more. Its complete, erm, rubbish.

IanB beat me to it - "zero waste to landfill" doesn't mean recycling or re-use. It means burning in an incinerator, because that's much cheaper than having a bunch of illegals sorting it for recycling.

When I was at school all organic things had one element in common, carbon. This carbon off-setting b---s--- just gets up my nose.

All pronouncements from the IOC or the local committee are suspect. They will make efforts to be greener, some will pan out some won't. But once you start transporting thousands of people around the globe for an event you aren't green any more.

The Olympic brand is all about making money and they will make money even if London ends up millions in the hole.

Vancouver and Whistler are about to host the Winter Olympics and they aren't as popular here as one might assume.

One impressive statement in the Sustainability Plan is that London 2012 won't be using carbon-offsetting as a way of pretending to look greener. Much respect for that.

I take it it's meant as a criticism (Audrey) that BMW don't make an electric or hybrid car.
But, hey, if one wants to get picky, don't forget those BMW adverts of a few years ago, where they said they were right at the forefront of the motor industry in terms of stamping all their plastic bits so that - at the end of a vehicles life - they could all be lovingly stripped off and deposited in the right recycling bins
Hmmm.
Er, yeah. Right on

I regularly translate sustainability/corporate responsibility reports for major Japanese companies, and if any client had ever suggested "Towards a one planet 2012" as a title it would have been sent straight back to them with the comment "That doesn't work in English." To see the London Olympic Committee coming up with a title that wouldn't disgrace Engrish.com has me burying my head in my hands in shame.

Perhaps we should have a two-planet 2012 by inviting the Martians to take part in the Olympics...?

I am reliably informed that this wasteful document exists only as a pdf, and that no overpaid consultant has dared to print out umpteen copies on sheets of glossy rainforest.

I know what you mean with the negatives but really this is so much further than I thought they would be. We talked about waste on barges 15 years ago but it really does seem like it will happen here. After 25 years of environmental interest/activity I have learnt just how long things take. And that you really have to give the occasional praise (like with a small child) to get the big boys to do what you want them to.
