No2EU are actually a left-wing group

dg writes: Oops, sorry.
I've re-columned them, thanks.

Looks like an interesting voting day next Thursday,.
I have been appalled by some of the party statements, trying to blame the EU and immigration for any difficulties they see in the UK.
Much immigration into the UK has come from India and Pakistan, so not from the EU at all. There seem to be quite a few Somalians here too.
The UK economy is now improving, as are employment opportunities. Parts of the rest of Europe are also beginning to show signs of economic recovery.
Many immigrants that come to the UK are hard working, how would the Olympic park and stadiums have been built without the hard working Polish.
Years ago it was Irish men who came to this country and did many labouring jobs.
When UK first joined the EU very many British workmen went to work in Germany, so it works both ways.
The xenophobic propaganda I here from some election candidates makes me feel sick.
That said I do think that the UK government should do more to maintain British ideals and beliefs amongst some immigrants. Also the benefits system should not make this country so attractive to some types of immigrants.
Countries united are more desirable than being isolated. Have we forgotten the fighting within Europe in WW2.
I like my European Health Card, the fact that I can drive in Europe without having to take our extra car insurance (as we did before being in the EU). The lowering of mobile telephone charges with EU countries. I think of Europe as one large country and would like to see the UK sign the Schengen agreement so I could get on the Eurostar with going through passport control.
The UK is such a small country, which if Scotland breaks away will be even smaller, think bigger and embrace Europe by being in it and help to change it.
Now who should I vote for next week?.
In their Party election broadcast "An Independence from Europe" said they will be at the top of the ballot paper. However I have got the postal ballot for London and 4 Freedoms Party are at the top. So next time you form a political party start your name with a number.
Could this blog going to be OK with plod?

Police ask blogger to remove tweet about Ukip - Politics - The Guardian
I wonder how many voters will read Communities United Party as Communist United Party.
Politics and not trains? honestly DG, your blog just isn't what it used to be... :-(
As long as there is a large Muslim population in Tower Hamlets the voting is likely to go towards a Muslim candidate for the directly elected Mayor, so Lutfur Rahman will probably be re-elected. Although the Independant candidates seem to have some Muslims and may dilute his vote so it could be an interesting night waiting for the results.
Politics and not football?!
I recall from when I worked in the borough that certain members of the "insert specific ethnic group" community were observed telling the women that they were "now going to the poll booths" and they would be expected to vote for "named candidate". And so they did...and seemingly still do...
I see the MEPs for London are determined by a method of proportional representation known as the D'Hondt method. That must deserve a blog from DG.

Just noticed that you didn't list the National Liberal Party in the MEP table although it appears in the photo of the ballot paper? Have they withdrawn?

dg writes: Missed them, sorry.
They're in now.

The theories about herd-mentality voting by Eastenders with a Bengali background, put forward both here and elsewhere, do miss the rather obvious evidence from the 2010 mayoral election. Not only did many of the people who could be lumped together in this group choose not to vote, but many that did voted for candidates other than Lutfur Rahman. What happened was that he barely mustered 12.5 per cent of the entire Tower Hamlets electorate. If he could only achieve that when, given the Labour Party's incompetent behaviour at the time, the field was left wide open for him, I very much doubt John Biggs will have any trouble becoming a properly elected mayor on May 22. However, people must get out and vote. That is going to be the biggest danger, although one of the heartening facts about Tower Hamlets is that it has, apart from the farce of the 2010 mayoral election, usually had a higher than average turnout on election nights - amazing considering that voter turnout does usually dip in poorer parts of the country.
B: Fortunately each person goes into the polling booth on their own, and can then choose which box to put their cross in by themselves. Even if they are shepherded to the polling station by members of their community. (My in-laws occasionally get a lift to the polling station from one party, and then vote for another one.)

If the elected mayor has executive powers, what do the council members do? Pointless talking shop, like the London Assembly?
The National Liberal Party are actually (by rather convoluted means, and an interim period during which they called themselves Third Way) an offshoot from the National Front. While they are not as openly "far right" as they once were, I'm not quite sure the centre column is the right one for them...
I won't be the last person to fall for that one, will I? Sorry, I'll switch them to the right column later.
