I find this so strange coming from a clearly educated and erudite man. Still, each to his own!

What is this thing of which you speak?

As I mentioned in a comment 6th Sept. I use the TV for old films or to watch the London news, so have missed seeing this 10 year series. -Missed it but not missed!

DG I'm really surprised. Was last night four hours well spent?

"I find this so strange coming from a clearly educated and erudite man. Still, each to his own."

I find this a disappointing comment. Being educatd and erudite does not mean you can't enjoy some of the things that are generally considered 'low-brow'. The ability to gain pleasure from all aspects of culture, regardless of social stigma or any fallacious distinction between what is culturally worthy and what is not, is surely one of the best things in life? There's no such thing as a guilty pleasure!

DG - you're the man x

Pitying vitriol ? - Wot, now that you're going to be prowling about in our neighbourhoods? Nah, come in for a cup of tea, rest your weary boots for a couple of seconds, ring our bells.

BB is one of the main things that my nation is sorry for releasing on the world. We stopped watching 4yrs ago.

"If you're already thinking "oh good grief, you sad deluded creature", then why don't you scroll straight down to the comments box and add your pitying vitriol there, rather than wasting valuable seconds reading what follows?"

A touch too defensive there, DG, if I may say so.

Funny you mention BB4 - a friend of mine, Ray Shah, finished runner-up that series, so I quite enjoyed it. Fair play to him, he's carved out a media career in Ireland on the back of his appearance in BB.

THC

Very ironic. You *almost* fooled me that you cared about this trash TV!

I really don't get the attitude people have who HATE big brother and dismiss anyone who enjoys it as uneducated. Same with people who dismiss football fans.

It was a GREAT show. Fascinating to watch the social interaction, some really interesting contestants and always entertaining.

What's not to like?

DG,

Surely Jack Dee wasn't evicted? He won Celeb BB.

???????

Still, you can always buy the four DVD box set....

Simon

"And I reckon I've watched 80-90% of all the daily shows ever since. Yeah, even BB4."

Same in our household, DG - to the bafflement and scorn of almost everyone we know. Good to know that we aren't the only ones to have found BB such a compelling ride.

Graeme- I agree with your sentiment. Although there are acts which truly are "terrible guilty pleasures".

Ask the Pope.

Ah, DG, the memories.

I was living in the UK when BB first went to air. In particular I remember the final night, which happened to co-incide with a wedding I was attending. References to, and speculation about who would win peppered the idle chit chat amongst guests and was enshrined in the videos of the official speeches. I'm pretty sure that quite a few of us ducked out to the bar to check progress on the TV.

The concept was imported to Australia, naturally, and lasted a couple of seasons. I watched on and off because it was just as you've described - a chance to peek in at how people interact. That whole human relationships thing. It's fascinating stuff.
