Is it me or is stuff like talking about changing Bank Holidays and GMT evidence that the Tories are trying to deflect attention from cuts?

This is the kind of pointless tinkering that suggests a government that has already run out of real policies.

While it is true that the Church decides when Easter occurs, it is Parliament that decides if it will also be a statuary day off work.

Maybe Parliament should tell the Church that if it can't finally work out when Jesus died, then they can damn well go without a state-approved holiday.

That might encourage them to sort their end out at last.

Why can't we just have *another* holiday in October? Even most Americans get nine bank holidays in a year (sometimes ten - varies by state)!

I get the horrible feeling that nobody in government has actually looked into this quite as thoroughly as DG has ... here's hoping someone in Downing street reads the blog and knocks the St George's day idea on the head for good and for all

Why not have the summer solstice? The weather ought to be better then and its nowhere near any other holiday - one month after Whit Monday and two months before August.

In the USA Easter comes with an allocation of no bank holidays! *sob*
My hubby gets 6 holidays, with none at all between New Years Day and Memorial Day at the end of May!

Although Easter is set by the churches, there is a piece of legislation on the books to fix the date of Easter:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Act_1928

Maybe that could be resurrected (sorry!)?

It would have the disadvantage of making every year have two bank holidays within a couple of weeks though, if the bank holiday did end up moving to St. George's day...

I wouldn't count on it that St George would have had a bank holiday, it's really only in Roman Catholic countries that saints are celebrated. St georde is not a red letter day in the prayer book either.
