Didn't think I'd say this, but I loved this post - perfectly sums up everything about her & her leadership
Excellent

Compared with the histrionics on twitter a much needed balanced view that lets the reader make up their own minds.
Agree with the previous commenters that this is excellent. When I first heard the news I had a quick look at a few newspaper websites and was unsurprised that the Telegraph was prominently, and without any debate, describing Mrs Thatcher as our 'greatest post-war Prime Minister.'
The Iron Lady, may she Rust in Peace.
Very clever. Gets round that De mortuis nil nisi bunkum problem.
You can't disagree that she was britain's greatest women prime minister (from a field of one) - apart from that nothing good can be said about her.
Why is she having a funeral to match Princess Di and the Queen Mum?
Because she was the Peoples' Distress.
brilliant.
She put the Great back into Britain and took United out of Kingdom.
As a popular joke went at the time, "A King rules a Kingdom; an Emperor rules and Empire; Mrs Thatcher rules the Country."

Personally, I think that Albion would have fallen into bankruptcy and soft-socialist dictatorship long ago had it not been for her.
Hilarious. Excellent stuff, especially the drop down boxes with Poll Tax, and split opinion.

I was kinda hoping Elvis Costello might have been one of the guests (if only by video link) on Newsnight last night. Of course it was never going to happen.
I agree - brilliant post. Something for everyone?
DG would make a brilliant Prime Minister!
Yes brilliant.
However you may regard her actions and I find it difficult to find one to agree with I have to admit she was most rare among politicians by being honest.
You knew where you stood with the woman
Absolutely superb!

I suspect that the first option is the closest to correct - she was actually less radical than she seemed. A lot of what happened would probably have happened anyway. The biggest issue was her genuine lack of compassion for those who suffered.
I wasn't even alive in 1990, but still, was Thatcher that bad - if you compare her to other politicians like Johnson, Galloway, or Livingstone she seems like an angel!
@Rotherhithe

Yes, "that" bad and then some.

Sadly, I fear that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
I initially read this in my RSS reader, where the option boxes don't come through. I thought DG was taking the piss out of hastily cobbled together news stories by writing something typo-laden:

"Margaret Thatcher, who has died at the age of 87, was Britain's Prime Minister. Elected three times, she the country and left a legacy that endures to this day.

Margaret was born in 1925. Her first experience of government was as Secretary of State for under Edward Heath. When he lost the 1974 election she him as leader of the Conservative Party and had her image by a PR team. The 1979 General Election proved , and Margaret to power in the aftermath of James Callaghan's . How well we remember her speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street .

As Prime Minister she the trade unions, council housing and the UK's manufacturing base. Unemployment , and there was soon across the country. But the Falklands campaign and its instantly the nation, and in 1983 she was re-elected with an majority.

In her second term Margaret faced Arthur Scargill and him. She the financial industry and a selection of state-run industries. Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev were close confidantes, and she also managed to keep Europe .

The proved highly unpopular and . In November 1990 her cabinet colleagues finally unseated her, and she left 10 Downing Street for on the backbenches. Her eleven year reign had the nation and she will long be remembered as .

Margaret Thatcher, you may have , but we will you."

Wonderful - thank you for taking the time to put in all those fiddly boxes for us to play with.

My husband and I went out for celebratory coffee and cream cake, when we heard the news. Your post was almost as much fun!
Hahahaha! DG at his best! Brilliant mate!
The "split opinion" box made me laugh out loud.

Very clever.

Alas we have a week of this to go.

In the mean time all the benefit changes that started on 1 and 6 April go undebated and even swept under the blue carpet.
Also alas, I came here with the hope of getting away from all that, (glum expression).
How long ago did you prepare this?
Never laughed at an obituary before - well done. Stopped me seething with reminders of injustices at least!
Mrs T had no other interest other than politics unlike Ted Heath (music and sailing), John Major (cricket) and Tony Blair (rock music and making a lot of money). It is a pity she showed no interest in trains like her Minister Michael Portillo as we might have had Crossrail built 20 years ago!I doubt she was reading your blog in her last days at the Ritz!
I do believe that Margaret has had more movies made about her than Ronald Reagan ever did. I wonder why that is? I'd guess its because it might be impossible to get an actor to play Reagan, since he'd perfected his role.

It's a good think John Wayne never decided to run for president.

Ugh...
Even though I'm not at all a Thatcherite, I still think Eddie Willer's comment above is pretty offensive.
Maggie, Maggie, Maggie......
@M@:

Would have been even better if DG had made it make complete sense without the option boxes too!
Very good idea, this multiple-choice approach. Depending on who you were (or are) you gained or lost as a result or her policies. It's only normal that there should be totally opposite views about Thatcher's premiership, as there are totally opposite interests in our society.
Great post.
Brilliant!
