But why?
It's about six weeks since the local Co-op started selling Christmas stuff. I noticed at the time that the mince pies were within feet of the "reduced" stand which featured Olympic tat, Valentine's Day tat, and even travel blankets featuring the Smurfs (from a film released in June 2011). Retail-wise, the seasons have no meaning at all now.
I can understand why people might want/need to spread the cost of Chistmas, but for me it takes away their specialness to eat the Christmas goodies before December. They'll have Creme Eggs out again soon.
I'm with Marc - much as I love mince pies, I'm not buying them in October ! If no-one bought them, the shops wouldn't bring them out in August ! Did you notice that Hot X Buns are now available year round ? crazy !
Christmas started months ago.

My Waitrose Halloween muffins expired 3 weeks before Halloween.
My local Waitrose had a big display at the start of the month with Heston's hidden orange xmas puds. They are apparently a scarce item so the girlfriend bought three of them?!
My wife bought a box of mince pies yesterday.....I only found the empty packet an hour after they got home.
Mince Pies. The work of the Devil.
M&S had a pile of mince pies marked down to 80p in their Ilford store a few weeks back. I was momentarily tempted but managed to resist.
I hate these early displays and continuous sale of seasonal items, it takes the "specialness" away from the event. From what I recall, Christmas in shops didn't used to begin until December.

I'm against extended Sunday opening hours for the same reason, rather than on religious or other grounds. With shops being closed, it still gives Sunday that feeling of being a bit different and breaks the 7 day week up.
