"I bet this sort of thing doesn't happen where you live."

Hello from South Africa. We wish.
barnet is paradise compared to the dump that is tower hamlets.
Having worked for Tower Hamlets Council for over twenty years I could repeat a whole list of dodgy things I have been told by work colleagues that he has done whilst in office, and also having worked as a Poll Clerk I have seen for myself the intimidation that was taking place outside Polling stations, I am cheering that this Corrupt Racist man has been removed from office. Having an Elected Mayor is in my opinion an open invitation for malpractice and we should go back to the previous way of running things to prevent this ever happening again.
Sounds like his party should be renamed "Lutfur First".
I am glad that in this country it is possible to commit electoral fraud in this manner, but more glad that it is possible to challenge this in court and have a fair trial. Also, I am pleased that judges are erudite and know how to use "beg the question" in the proper way (at least until the descriptivists change what is proper).
It is a shame that the next mayor can't come in and declare all of his previous actions as void (as he wasn't Mayor, so he had no authority).

I presume the redevelopment of the hospital can be stopped (or put on hold pending an actual review of whether it is a reasonable thing to do).

As for the buyers of the properties, well, they were sold them fraudulently, so they can take it up with the person who enabled that.
What's so bad about Barnet? It's my borough so I obviously haven't been paying attention.
Remember the residents had to pay to bring the prosecution - the 'authorities' weren't interested, if they had lost they would have had to pay the bills.

Yet again 'the system' looked after its own interests.
I'm with you @fishislandskin. Seen enough with my own eyes to think this decision is just scratching the skin of the body corruption in TH's.

Not that leaders of other councils have all been squeaky-clean either.

@ Dave 0931 - just search for "barnet blog" on Google and take your pick. Now clearly there are political slants to what's written but there seem to be some decidedly "odd" (being polite) things going on in Barnet and in how the Council is run and how its democracy and legal governance operate.
Why have those that have "seen" all this malpractice going on not reported it ? It's up to everyone to hold elected representatives to account, and if you see something wrong, it's your civic duty to take action, not wait for someone else.... good on those four for sticking to their principles....
Hello from Spain. We wish too :-/

Good luck, Tower Hamlets!
To the extent that one can believe Private Eye, Tower Hamlets is not the only local authority to have "issues", by a long chalk.

Having said that, we should also remember the many honest public-spirited people who hold various elected local office throughout the country.

Well done those whose persistence sorted this one, anyway.
So now he is out of a job. I suppose he might apply to lead FIFA...
That type of crime is a threat to our entire democratic system, and is therefore Treason. I suggest capital punishment should be brought back for such serious crimes.. If people don't understand what democracy is, or don't want to, maybe they will understand the punishment?
