Now I know this I will make sure I do not go on the underground - is there no escape from what essentially is what dense boys do in school playgrounds
No, Nick, there isn't
Ah, I remember that England vs Argentina game in 1998.
Our driver on the District line (who presumably had a tranny radio in his cab - back when wireless meant "wireless"), as we headed east, kept us all informed, over the intercom, every time a goal was scored. Enthusiastic amateurism, meet commercialised professionalism. |
Five weeks? Five bloody weeks? I thought it would be over in two.
lets hope these "Tube Scores" are slightly more accurate than some "Tube Minutes"...
Wow, that's gonna be funny.
"Canary Wharf - Costa Rica 2-0" "Yellow card due to a person taken ill on the train" Foreign tourists will be utterly confused :) |
At least this time they won't be interrupting the in-train announcements. "The next station is ... zzt cccht... and Lichtenstein have scored again... zzzt ... ssht.. for the Central Line"
Well TFL good idea, let's see SouthEastern Trains follow suit.
There's already too much spurious information on these displays. It's ridiculous warning visually that a train is approaching - if someone can read that message, they will be able to see the train. Just as a train IS approaching is quite often the time when I want to see if the next one would be a better alternative. But instead I'm being told to be careful of slippery surfaces, or a lift is not working somewhere, or - now - Italy has just scored. Bah humbug.
Oh god no! I'm already sick to the back teeth with the world cup and the first ball hasn't even been kicked yet!
My understanding is that "Tube Minutes" refer to how far a train is from the station, not when the train will arrive in the station, eg,if a train is being held at a red signal, it may still show as being 1 minute away, even though the delay may last longer than 60 seconds. Perhaps someone with greater knowledge of the system could confirm this?
Oh good. I can't wait. I am literally overbrimming at excitement.
Not. |
The 1st cricket Test Match between England and Sri Lanka starts at Lords Cricket ground in London today, be nice if they put the Test match score on the display.
I never watch or have had any interest in football. |
Again money talks. If there is so much "free space" available on these matrix info boards why not give "customers" more "usual" info about travel problems/incidents that may be of more interest. Mind you it was a "fantastic" leap forward when they introduced a clock on the London buses...
This is very good. Well worth watching...

No hiding place for the James Bolams and Rodney Beweses of the commuting public, then...
Bernie, that John Oliver presentation was brilliant. And eye-opening. And funny.
Gah no escape from football even on DG! Glad I don't take the bus in Kent though : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-27795494
It's information pollution. We're already swamped with art and entertainment pollution and now this. What price peace and tranquility?
Yay! Another good reason to be thankful for having a motorbike :)
Much more likely to annoy me by flashing up the score of a match I was recording or wanted to watch the highlights of.
Obviously an essential service, as so few people have smartphones these days!
Love the line about "a man 6000 miles away had pulled his hamstring"! |
Yesterday lunchtime all the displays on the Jubilee Line were out of action - 'please use the destination notices on the front of the trains '. Great if they weren't behind reflective glass barriers.
Possible coincidence, of course. |
It would be interesting to know how much John Barnes is getting in comparison to TFL - 10% or 20% of a routemaster bus?
Another reason for being glad I no longer have to use the Tube every day. Thank you for the information DG: I have just sent my strong complaint to TFL. This is another intrusion on a par with cold-calling. Give us a bit of respite.
The Crown and Sugarloaf by St Brides is a cool, quiet Football-free zone by the way - as advertised on their pavement signboard. Full marks to them. Nice pint yesterday. Fabulous Belgian marble bar-top too. |
Ah, the Crown and Sugarloaf. There's a pub with a history and a half (see my old blog: http://www.planetbods.org/blog/2009/10/10/10yearsofpubs2 for the headache inducing tale.)
Always an excellent pub to get away from the world. Especially football. |
Have you really never heard of ESPN before?
I am surprised. They have beem around for years and have been in the UK for quite a while. Despite being American their foorball coverage is good and their cricket coverage through ESPNCricinfo is second to none. |
I'd really never heard of ESPN before.
The fact they're a sports website will have had a lot to do with that. |
I saw this totally useless (to me) information on my way home tonight at Holborn. the train describer there has 3 lines so it's not obliterating vital (to most of us) information. I think I'll get used to ignoring it for the next few weeks.
