The "gap" in services from St Pancras existed up until the 5 September because HS1 did track inspections then.

The new timetable (the one you link to) doesn't start 'til today....and the need for completer possessions for track inspections is no longer needed.

To hear a musical lift you only need to go as far as the Royal Festival Hall London, and ride up and down their glass elevator. Goes from baritone at the bottom to soprano at the top.

Wow, those clocks are fantastic!

Isn't it great? Makes going home to visit the Aged Ps more fun. Come back before the end of Sept, DG, to see the East Cliff installation and visit our community Roman Villa/Iron Age dig next to it - before it falls into the sea...

Being an anorak I found this vid on YouTube of the last ever train to visit Folkestone Harbour Station in March 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEe4Joa2O50&feature=related

I have one completely surreal memory of this station. In 1980 I was waiting for the ferry to take me over to Ostend and then travelling onto Brussels to watch the European Cup Winners Cup Final between Arsenal and Valencia. Around 2am, in the deathly quiet of the night we watched as a train slowly descended the viaduct packed to the brim with supporters singing Good old Arsenal, air horns blaring and supporters hanging out of the windows. Blimey, that was 31 years ago!

Shame the train is so expensive, I was planning to head down for the day on bank holiday sunday and the fare was £67 return which is extortionate for that distance...I thought it was just because I was looking at the last minute, but that appears to be the cheapest fare that's ever available for the fast train (and even the slow train is £57)

Hi lockedintheattic
I regularly go there (last there last week) - day trip is about £22 on high-speed, bought off-peak on the day (which is plenty of time to see most things): tickets at St Pancras. That is with a Network card (which gives you a third-off so though more, still nothing like the fares you saw.)

...and I got down there for £22 too (including a third off for my Gold Card). It's still a lot, but a weekend trip isn't wallet-crippling.

I am so glad you came to Folkestone again. It's a wonderful town that hopefully will regain some of it's former life since the departure of the ferry and the English seaside holiday trade. With the triennial and the artistic quarter there is some hope, any how it's by the sea and that's a big plus compared to other towns
