As a disgruntled Merton resident who missed your very first random report by years, I'm still holding out for you to go back some day. (Even if it is just about wallpaper...)

I have to admit, I was fully expecting this 31st borough to be Barking and Dagenham. Looking back, you've been making snide comments about the place pretty much since, as you put it, "day one", so it would be the most astounding coincidence if it actually does end up being the very last!

Geez,
If you like William Morris, you might be interested in the first public exhibition (admission free) they are holding at Two Temple Place, formerly known as Astor House (next to the Temple law inns on the Embankment), which is called "William Morris: Story, Memory, Myth" and will be open October 27 - Jan 29.
Even if one doesn't care to see an exhibition on William Morris, this offers a chance to see the interior of the building, which up to now apparently has not been open to the public very often. Although it was open during the recent Open House Weekend, I thought it sounded a bit (relatively) new & gaudy, so I passed it by in order to see other things, but last week I went on a London pub walk during which the guide showed a photo of the interior of Two Temple Place, and I realized that it would be worth a look.

it's still there - put "Merton" into the search thingy on the right hand toolbar and the entry for March 2004 will come up as the first hit

I don't believe 7 Hammersmith Terrace has the "last preserved Arts and Crafts interior in the country". The very lovely Blackwell in Cumbria is an intact arts and crafts house.

How much for a 99?!!! Yet another great report. I'll be sad to see this series come to an end.

The 7 Hammersmith Terrace website claims it has "the last authentic Arts and Crafts interior in Britain". It seems they may have over-claimed! (or else they're acknowledging the house's unique link to William Morris)

No, they're definitely over-claiming.

Have you ever been to Standen in Sussex?

It's fantastic.

Over-claiming or not - 7 Hammersmith Terrace has the merit of being what most of us would recognise as a "home" as opposed to the stately home nature of Standen et al - and a much better experience than the Kelmscott House basement downstream. Bookmark it for a visit when it re-opens - you will be amazed !

Glad your jamjar let you get to visit LBH&F's lovely riverside before the possible upgrade of Bazalgette's sewers spoils the view.
