Right mode of transport - wrong line!
and of course the opening sequence of the Young Ones was filmed at the Lido when it was sti;; used as an open air swimmimng pool. I remember swimming there once as a child it was freezing
Many a Sunday as a child was spent at Ruislip Lido. I swam in there back in the 60s either because the water was cleaner or because we didn't bother about that sort of thing then. The reason we stopped going wasn't the water quality per se but the amount of broken glass and cans that were in there when the days of "Keep Britain Tidy" got dumped somewhere.

We used to catch the 97 bus from Northfields directly there. That's a route that's long gone!
They do a very popular "Ghost Train" ride over Halloween too, in collaboration with a local theatre group.
The Lido was my playground from 1956-1959, just reading this takes me back .
I also remember when they filmed "A Night to Remember " at Ruislip Lido.
The Santa Specials are brilliant - they go through the dark woods to an illuminated grotto station.

My family are from that area, and Dad was for many years at the RSC (Ruislip Sailing Club). In the 80s there were still dozens of us there at weekends sailing on the lake, and water-skiing over jumps drew big crowds. Not only was the original cafe (where we'd get out post-sailing ice creams) torched but the RSC clubhouse was too. Many a "Metroland" car treasurehunt was started from there, with us kids in the back seats hampering progress. "Robert" was the loco at that time on the railway, later joined by one pretty similar to one on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch - and subsequent additions too. "Mad Bess" the steam loco came much later - but for me "Robert" is the loco for Ruislip. The earlier steam loco and i think an early I/C engine are now in a private miniature railway collection.
I lived just down the road and remember water ski-ing at the Lido - I am sure the BBC used to televise competitions as well. As previous post the Santa Express is very popular (and good) but you do need to queue for a while. Typical H & S about water quality stops even paddling. Very strange. Anyone interested in the Grand Union canal feeder check out http://www.londoncanals.co.uk/ruislip/ruislp01.html Mum still lives down the road and the woods are very good - as a youngster they seemed much bigger than they actually are of course.
I remember Ruislip Lido in the 1960s; as a child it was the railway that really stirred my imagination; is it my memory or was there really a diesel loco EMD F-Unit...? (A quick Google and yes.)

Amazing seeing this with its central headlight blazing appearing from between the trees...
