Ah, the memories...

Yet again one of my favourite walks.

Actually I have not yet done the Hampton Court to Kingston bit on the north bank. I have once done this section using the south bank which has no official path at this point as far as I can tell. Its slightly unnerving as Thames Ditton is not served by proper reassuring London buses so once you enter you are committed. Thames Ditton quite nice but a bit strange. You can't help feeling its full of people who like to believe that they don't really live in London - and I suppose technically they don't. Its a sort of not-quite-posh rural Surrey tacked on the London suburbs. Nice unexpected views over the river of Hampton Court in places though.

Yey! For the first time I can say that I have actually beaten 'The Geezer' to this part of London, but only because I grew up around here.

You never, ever see pictures of the ferry? Is it free?

Hammertons Ferry runs between Marble Hill Park and Ham House. Feb - Oct 10.00 until 18.00 (or dusk if earlier). Winter service weekends only.
Cost 60p per adult, 30p per child, bicycles 50p, first dog free then 10p per dog.

Yes the ferry is very discreet- just stand on the bank and wave and the boat eventually chuggs over.

Glad you enjoyed my end of the river DG - Ham to Richmond is my favourite section and although you are right to say stick to the tow path and not ascend the hill, for a better cup of coffee/tea and a fantastic view of the river just go through a mysterious half-hidden tunnel that takes you into the park on the other side of the main road to the Hollyhock Cafe.

I like the photo of Kingston Bridge - on site of one of the oldest crossings of the river .You did know of course that Kingston comes from Kings' Stone and not Kings' Town - the stone where 7 Saxon Kings were crowned is still there, fairly near the river walk - on the Hogsmill tributary.

Well DG, I went to school in Twickenham (in the 1950's) and used to play in most of the open places you passed on this walk.
The (ex) Thames studios at Tedington, were originally Warner Bros film studios, then for a many years Rediffusion TV studios, (Londons TV before Thames took over)
Next door to the studios is the Lensbury Club and grounds.(For the well heeled!)

I still Richmond upon Thames about once a month.

John
