Back when I first starting using the Underground in the late 70s, Stratford was but a solitary tick on the map with a BR interchange crows foot next to it. Compare and contrast with it now on the map!

Am I am experiencing Deja vu here I'm sure the central line used to open the doors on both sides in the late 70's early 80's at Stratford

From the horse's mouth (ie a DLR Customer Service Manager) last week: the DLR Stratford International extension will not open until "early 2011".

Greg is right to criticise the illogical platform numbering, but apparently the key to the problem is that the NR signalling and passenger information systems are too well interlinked. That's probably why the LO 'new platforms' took 1 and 2 with them, as this was the cheap and cheerful option.

My suggestion, is to cut down on NR renumbering by using 1 and 2 for the current DLR, 3 and 4 for the Central line, then initially use 5,6,8,9,10, 10A, 11, 12, 13, 14, for the NR/LO platforms. Still fairly logical so far.

Then either 15 - 19 for the Jub/DLR, (or even A - E perhaps to indicate the different level)? This assumes the Jub/DLR numbering is of no concern to NR info systems.

At a later opportunity, 8-10A could then be renumbered to 7-10.

Greg,

Intrigued by those black and white photos! Have you got them scanned in? I'd love to take a look if you do... [email protected] .

Was hoping to use platform 3a myself this morning - but Central Line closures ended that. Hopefully some time this week.

Interesting read,

Dave

The Mezzanine Gateline Building (The one linked to Platform 3a via walkway A (B&C being the 2 into the JLE) is due to open when the Westfield Stratford City Development opens and thus Bridge 17 (Town Centre Link Bridge) is open allowing use of the new steps. The DLR branch is due to be energised at 0001 on 21/09/2010 so allowing for testing and commissioning maybe late autumn for passenger opening...

Very pedantic - sorry.

There are still through DLR services from Stratford to Lewisham, but only in the M-F morning rush.

Further to the comment above [sorry, anonymous], I have heard that the Mezzanine ticket hall will be opening in the next couple of months - way before the Link Bridge and Stratford City (Sept '11)... The external lift to the mezzanine is in an ready to go, and the paving is about to be laid. You'll be able to walk down the new Meridian Steps, but not up and over the bridge.

I used Platform 3a last night in the 'rush hour'. Well, it was 6pm and even platform 3 was fairly empty with most people having having abandoned the tube. Two staff on the platform, and me. I was the only person who got into the carriage, which only had one other person in it. Brilliant. Shame I was only going one stop!

As a daily Stratford Central Line user, anything to avoid those congested steps is fabulous.

In central Munich we have "in" on one side of the train and "out" on the other. Now that does save time!
