Essex used to play County cricket in Valentines Park and a very pleasant summer's day out that was too.

A stray "i" in the last link of the first paragraph, and a dreaded blank.gif in the IODS Twitter link.

The problem with all this obsession with opening on 14th February is that all too few people will ever see the mansion in the summer. Granted, it was worse than usual this year, but when one of your major attractions is the garden, throwing all the biggest parties in February is a bit silly.

Valentine's Park is fantastic. I mentioned it in my Top 10 Redbridge last year though unfortunately when I went the house was closed for a private function. I'm planning to visit again when the weather's better.

Sadly someone stole some copper from the newly restored roof a few months ago so they have had to spend more time and money restoring it again.

@ swirlythingy, I live in Redbridge, though not near Valentine's Park, the local paper lists events there all year round, but obviously their name means a lot of emphasis on today

The gardens at Valentine's have some specimens I regard as rare as I've never found them outside botanical gardens - best seen in May (last year the Bakeoff marquee was distracting visitors - fine by me! Nice, people-free photos...ha ha.

I too am a Redbridge resident, and I ♥ Valentine's Park. A shame, though, that from the air the park doesn't appear heart-shaped, like that tropical island you sometimes see pictures of. That would be perfect. For a modestly-sized municipal park it's full of variety, each distinct area having a quite different feel to it.

Now, much as I like the mansion, the best building is the somewhat shabby cafe closer to the lake, which seems permanently stuck in a time-warp. I must go and take some more pictures there, as it's just the kind of place to suddenly vanish due to redevelopment.

I grew up in Ilford - and as a youngster, Valentines Park seemed huge. Thanks Richard for reminding me of the cafe and thanks DG for visiting and reminding me of my childhood. I live in Melbourne now(the Commonwealth Estate on the east side of VP makes more sense!) and this day in 2009 I took my 2 young children to Valentines Park. They loved the squirrels, the paths, the (frozen) lake, the grotto, the playground, the cafe. Quite the jewel of IG1...
