Wow!
'Take me up to the top of the city' - Kate Bush
As Crystal Palace's transmitter stands on top of a 120m hill, it is higher, (but not taller), than both Westerham Heights and the Shard. But I don't think it's possible to stand on the top!
... well Jo Public is not allowed to stand on the top of CP mast, but there must be a mender up there every now and then, twiddling something.

Almost anyone can go rather higher than this within the London boundary, by sitting in a plane queueing up to land at Heathrow. But perhaps that is getting silly.

A magnificent series, DG, which I have very much enjoyed. Thank you for your efforts and descriptive talent.
Brillant series DG! Loved it. Thanks!
Thanks for these DG - really enjoyed the variety. Off to my local top this afternoon, weather permitting
Ever since I knew, many years ago, that Westerham Heights was the highest point in Kent I have been fascinated by how insignificant it is.

It is not marked as such, not even ever having had a trig point, you tell people who have travelled the road many times that its the highest point in Kent and they say "surely not", no-one seems to try to capitalise on it.

I didn't realise that it beat many other nearby counties too.
On a dry day, that quarter-kilometre difference in height could mean a 2'C difference in temperature - the Alps of Greater London.
In case anyone wants to come along, Lewisham Cyclists have a ride going past this very spot on Sunday 7 September. Details here: http://lcc.org.uk/events/north-downs-summit All welcome, but it's a bit of an uphill slog (obviously) to get there.
Thanks for a great series.
I'm no more than an occasional visitor to the Croydon / Crystal Palace area but I was over that way yesterday and was surprised at some of the vistas you can gain of the city, as you catch a view between this road or that.
Although you've shown that they're not the highest points in Southwark, my own favourite views are from Overhill Road, off Lordship Lane, and from by the bandstand in Horniman Gardens.
BTW, as regards Westerham, there's actually a 19th century fort at Betsom's Hill: although it has now been largely built over, there are still parts of the old walls and gun positions that are still visible from the lane.
Crystal Palace certainly offers some great views across London and in the road down to Anerley is a patchwork of green shades towards Kent. Meanwhile the hill at the junction of Village Way, Stone Park Avenue and Crossways in Beckenham affords sweeping views towards Croydon. Not exactly the London skyline but most definitely a vista which has changed over time!
Excellent series - thanks.
Great series on the hilltops of our town. Thank you. This an excellent blog and I have Chris Fowler to thank for bringing it to my attention. :-)
