Damn, I didn't see this yesterday. If I had filled it in I would have added to your female reader count and people who blog.
You keep thanking your readers. Well, thank you DG for providing the first thing I read on the internet most days. Please keep up the good work.
I missed it as well. You could post more about kittens ...
When I started to read DG, I lived in London, then moved to England, and now it's Europe.
Do you have your own blog adds up to 899. Which is not more than 900. Did some people not bother on filling in all the answers? Not so tricky that one considering it was just a Yes/No
... time for an experiment. For the nest two years blog more about kittens and see if your readership changes :)
And I thought I had a male dominated readership!

I know DG doesn't like the idea of change to the blog layout but you would certainly improve things (possibly with the ladies) for mobile if you went for a "responsive design".

Also... I must admit I read using my RSS reader to have the black-on-white text that I like for reading. You're not doing yourself any favours IMHO with the grey background.

I used a nice plug-in WordPress responsive design here recently:

Same as ganching. Perhaps leave us a bit more time next year?
And i don't need to know about kittens thanks. Though some of your male readers seem pretty keen...
Im female and I enjoy every bit of your blog, even if i dont always comment
I also found this blog in about 2011 and have since read every single post from where you first started

Fascinating stuff :)
Just a little context to the browser/smartphone/RSS question. These are not mutually exclusive. I read in desktop RSS and will switch to the browser if it appears to be a post that the formatting is probably worth seeing or is image heavy. On mobile and tablet I only view on an RSS reader. So there is some overlap between these.
Although I completed the survey yesterday, I did feel somewhat discriminated against since I am in my seventies and there was no category for me.

I had to throw in my lot with those youngsters in their sixties!
As a 20 year old female living in England (alas not London) who has read your blog daily since late 2012 I'm interested to see this. I too, enjoyed the posts so much I went right back through your archive to 2002. Fascinating stuff. Keep up the good work, DG :-)
Surely readers from outside the UK are just as interested in reports from Uxbridge (former home of the Bell Punch Company, no less) as the rest of us?
Another female who missed the vote yesterday. I fall at the low end of many of your demographics: female, over 60, and lives in US. I enjoy your well-written, thoughtful pieces. It also helps that I grew up in UK, love trains and buses, and my Nan, aunts and uncles lived in E3. Mile End station, Tower Hamlets Cemetery (my Nan is buried there), and surroundings are familiar territory for me.
DG and I have talked about responsive design, and indeed I have a responsive version of DGs site template sat here on my computer.

The issue is making sure that 12 years of back posts do not break. And as a lot of the layouty stuff has been done with tables and inline styles it makes it very hard to change!

Any suggestions for a bit of "get out of jail" CSS will be gratefully received. Email: tridentscan at jaggedseam dot com
What is 'responsive design'? Whatever it is, this 'lady' is quite happy with things the way they are, thank you very much :-)

I notice that from a total response of 905(?) not all felt they could answer question one - male or female. Indeed it had the lowest number of respondees to your readership survey. Perhaps the question should have included the same helpful information provided with question three (pick one).

76 yo woman here. Live in the US and holiday every year in the UK, always spending 7-14 days in London. I am a daily reader. I like the variety of topics in your postings and the quality of the writing. Never a dull read. I have planned many excursions in London based on your blogs.
Thanks MUCH!!
I'm another 60+ female reader from London who missed the survey yesterday. I do read every post, but sometimes have to catch up a few days in one go. There may be more of us than you know...
Another female longtime reader who missed the survey - could it be that more of your male readers read blogs on a Monday than your female readers? Or that your male readers are more survey-friendly? Wonder if you would have had different answers on a Friday, when more people might be slacking off work enough to do the odd internet survey?
Sorry if you missed the survey, but it's always 24 hours long to make the figures comparable year on year.

Yes, that means daily readers are more likely to reply than less regular readers, which skews the figures a bit. And it means some of you miss out, sorry.

If you want to be sure to be a part next time, stick the first week of March 2016 in your calendar now. Or read every day :)

Perhaps DG has some genderqueer readers who don't feel comfortable with identifying themselves (implicitly cisnormatively) as either male or female? Although I doubt he needs 54 options, a la Facebook.

I like the design - it is simple, clean, and works. The triumph of content over from, unlike much of what passes for website design these days.

I can't remember when I started reading regularly, so I guessed.
Hi

Your survey wasn't the best designed survey, which may explain some of the results. For example the question on how you access content only allowed for ONE answer. Although I access the site through the RSS feed, I always access it on smartphone and tablet. By selecting RSS feed I was prevented from selecting phone or tablet (and phone and tablet). Which may explain why respective % are much lower for mobile consumption - they simply don't reflect the reality as a result of constrained choices in the survey. I suspect most readers read your content on phone, tablets and on desktops, depending on the time of the day. Hope this helps!
Interesting survey but I agree you need it to run for more than one day for those who catch up every few day, pure chance I logged on yesterday.
I like the page design, don't change it just to be like everyone else.
I think the question about blogging should have included partners - I said 'no' because I don't blog but my husband does and I do recommend bits to him to read.
I don't live in London but do use your recommendations for things to do.
Keep up the good work.
Kath
here's some kittens as requested (by some)
http://new.livestream.com/tinykittens/cupcake
never mind the kittens - when are you getting back on the buses - or are you being held in Chingford against your will? Is it time to send a search and rescue party?
Re the drop-off in female readers, I wonder if this is due to a perceived increase in content about tube trains. Tube aficionados may find this hard to understand, but for some people (more likely female) it is simply a handy way to travel around London and they’re not interested in the details.
Do you keep stats about subject matter, DG?

dg writes: I last totted up some stats in 2011, although I suspect things have evolved since.
I haven't seen any increase in content about tube trains. Not that I'd mind in the least.
- female, reader since 2003
I am another 60+ female long time reader who lives in the US. I don't always read daily (I missed the survey), but definitely catch up every few days. I started reading in 2004.
I have enjoyed all the posts of the transit journeys you have made over the years as well as the artistic events, hidden quirky places, responses to requests for free advertising and long walks. It is a great blog; thanks so much for all your efforts.
Does anyone have any data on gender and internet use and participation more generally? Could it be that women have less 'free time' than men? Some studies re household labour would indicate that this might be true for some age demographics.

I love trains and tube stories btw. And kittens.
Another long term female reader here. I only catch up with "my blogs" once or twice a week when I get a moment. I normally read 3 or 4 days worth of your blog in one go, which is why I didn't get to fill your survey in. I suspect women use the internet in a different way to men!
Another female late to the party - sometimes I keep up with blogs daily but I'm too busy at present. And I'm in a different age category this year.
Another female reader here, visiting regularly, though not daily. I have enjoyed all posts, DG, to the point of even laughing out aloud. Not UK based, mostly in Australia though work takes me here and there around the region.

I'd also like to thank you for the effort you put in to writing...crafting...something for us to read each day. It's much appreciated.
I'm still here DG, about to 'celebrate' 10 years of Jakartass.net.

I don't post as often as before, but life has a way of intruding, mainly through other writing commitments.

You were one of my pre-blogging inspirations so I salute you, once again.
