I had always been told that the Westbourne rose in the crypt of my old school (University College School) in Frognal. The foundations of the school had to be designed to cope with springs rising under the school - and there are channels in the floor of the boiler room to allow the rising water to run off.

I love this river-series. There are too much forgotten facts in every town.

Whitestone Pond looks so familiar. I wonder if that was the pond Dad used to drive us to, to sail our boats. I'm sure it was somewhere in Hampstead. Ours couldn't compete with the remote controlled boats whhich kept trying to ram us.

CornishCockney - highly likely that you sailed model boats on the Whitestone pond. The alternative would have been the model boating pond on the western side of the Heath (towards Parliament Hill Fields) - but that looks very different as it is surrounded by grassy banks.
