BBC Studios & Post Production aren't closing completely - they've been busy dismantling the kit from some of the studios and putting it back together again in various places in Elstree; and the past production bit has gone to Soho to be with their kin. So they're not all out of a job.

Madness are playing the car park this evening (you might be able to see - or at least hear - this from Wood Lane), and and despite never having regularly broadcast from the building, The One Show recorded their farewell on Saturday. It'll be on Friday's show, and features a tap dancer or two.
I cannot shed any tears over the closing of the old Television Centre, especially as it is no longer going to be torn down. I do though wonder how wisely the BBC spends license payers money, having to rent back studio space later. I guess it will be cheaper than maintaining the entire site and be more flexible.
I think Twickenham studios which were to have closed last year remained open, and that Ealing studios are still in business, so there is studio space available and the old Television Centre was probably too large for the BBC's production nowadays.
Of course the BBC also got rid of their transmitters and now pay to have their output sent to air.
I was more disappointed to see the old Odeon (Pavilion) cinema in Shepherds Bush demolished, although part of the frontage remains.
I went to see 'Beat the pack' last month for the same reason, it was quite moving walking around the building...
End of an era. I bet every person who grew up watching Blue Peter, Vision On or Swapshop in the 1970s/1980s can still remember the full postal address!!
"the best free theatre in town"

I think that honour goes to the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House. A half hour recording of some comedy show for Radio 4 (or Radio 4 Extra) takes about 45 minutes to an hour. There is far less 'wasted' time as there isn't really anything technical to worry about, so the only retakes are for fluffed lines. Also, with no cameras you get to sit far closer to the action.
