Thank you DG. I was aware of the name Annie Besant but few of the details of her work so it's great to find out more.
A fascinating story and slice of London history. Thanks!
Well said DG. Great piece.
Fascinating! Thanks, DG.
There is a link to the tennis tournament taking place this week. Annie Besant is the great-great-grandmother of BBC Wimbledon presenter and former player, Andrew Castle. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-500624/GMTVs-Andrew-Castle-finds-rebel-indecent-lewd-cause-family-tree.html
Fascinating report DG. Thank you.
Essential history for everybody. An excellent, moving piece. Thank you DG.
I echo the others' comments, but would also point out the parallels between the appalling conditions and low wages in this situation and developing world production of 'products' today - iGadgets and cheap clothing being just two examples.

The only things that are different is time frame (+125 years) and the country of occurrence.

But, folks don't care that much or they'd stop shopping at Primark (etc) and do a bit of research before buying certain electrical (etc) brands. yes, you shoudl feel guilty as you type your response on your iPhoney while wearing your £1 t-shirt....
Thank you for the history lesson. I'd always known a little bit about the strike, but I'm glad you've been able to fill in the detail.
So, you got 'around-to-it' eventually!
With recent news from Falkirk resulting in the right-of-centre parties (i.e all of them) attempting to demonise the Trades Union movement once again, this is a salutary reminder of what trade unions are really about.
Thank you Mr Diamond, I absolutely love your blog and especially your political awareness and love of the history that is so important for us all to learn from.

I cycle past this stupid statue of Gladstone every day, and never fail to think of those match girls and their brave stance. It pleases me to see his hands still crimsoned every now and then.

I then cycle past the Minnie Lansbury clock, beautifully restored in the past few years, commemorating another amazing strong woman from those times. I would like to hear more from you about her if you know more about her story. She puts to shame the Labour councillors (eg in my Newham borough) who lie down and accept all the horrific things being done to poor people nowadays.

Thanks Diamond you are truly cool!!!!
Didn't have to travel too far from your front door for this one! Nice to have the full story and all the links - much appreciated.

I first heard of this piece of history just over a year ago, thanks to a strange art installation I visited. In fact, you went too...
