The Routmaster is still for me, one of the icons of London.
How I would have loved to ride on that K type.
Thanks for the memories. I lived on Graham Road for a couple of years in the early 90s and the best way to get from Dalston to the centre was always the 38. Thanks to this site, I went back for the "last ride of the old 38" - was it really 7 years ago? I know the old routemasters weren't great if you had a pushchair, wheelchair etc., but for me that open platform was one of the best things about London life.
Excellent stuff. I especially liked 'and puts her foot down when daddy wants to make an early break in Dalston.'
I've still never been on a[moving] Routemaster after living in London for 7 years :-(
Love the interplay between old and new.
I saw one of the new buses for the first time on Friday, and while not quite as enthusiastic as Henry, I was rather excited and wished I was on that one instead!
Ah the old Routemaster how I love seeing you on the streets. Of course they still run daily on the two heritage routes, usually full of happy looking tourists.

A New Bus for London is frankly nothing in comparison.
I'm still like Henry, but my parents are now too old to go on trips like this any more :(
I grew up with the Routemaster on every route in my locality, apart from that little single decker which seemed never to go anywhere I wanted to go. These buses were as solid, durable and reliable (except on very hot summer days) as the pavement under your feet. I remember my complete disappointment as when I first got on the first bus meant to replace the RM (the DMS). A few years later I got to drive an RM at the North Weald bus rally along the airstrip. That's one memory that really sticks particularly the bit where I had to park within 2 inches of the vehicle in front of me, a feat which I had always admired as a passenger in the top deck front row, but made simple with the visibility from the RM cab. If they are still allowing visitors to drive RM's at the show it will be well worth a visit this year (be prepared to wait though).
