I've seen a few walked cats in my time. Mostly outside of London. There's a bloke here in Brussels who walks his rather large rabbit to the supermarket. He (the rabbit) enjoys riding down the conveyor belt at the checkout.
Oooooh, a kitten! In DGs blog!
I saw a woman at Piccadilly Circus tube station last year, riding the "down" escalator at the height of rush hour with a large (and very alive) rabbit draped over her shoulder like a scarf. And can we dispense with this "a thing" quirk now?
Ooh finally a post about kittens!
if it was a very young kitten, this would be possible, but older kittens soon explore much further, and won't come back when called, so unless this was very close to their home the man will probably lose his kitten.
When I visited Old Leigh, near Southend, last year I saw a young woman with a stoat on the end of a lead. No one else seemed to consider this unusual. By the way I can't find a blog for the sections of the Thames Estuary path that end up in Leigh-on-Sea, or have I missed something? I know you weren't too impressed by the blogging opportunities on the earlier sections of the path, but surely you would have completed it? Highly unusual for you if not! Go on, you might see the stoat lady, and it would be interesting to read your take on the old sea-side fishing village of Leigh-on-Sea.
Are you sure it was a stoat? I've seen ferrets on the lead in Richmond Park?

As for the differences between the mustelids: - one is weaselly recognised, but the other's stoatally different.

As for the rabbit on the checkout conveyor belt, I trust it wiped its feet first.

I walk one of my cats, when she is somewhere she doesn't know she won't leave my side, so it's easy...

The other cat is too dumb and too scared of strangers to even attempt that with...
WHAT??? NO PHOTO????? WAHHHHH!!!!! Wanna see piccy of the kitty!

Also reflecting on how different our reactions would have been ... I'd have asked kitty's name age, sex, why s/he was being taken for a walk and commented on how beautiful and snuggly wuggly said kitten was ... and if kitty was willing there would have been some kitty scritches in the offing, and a cuddle if possible. I'd then have taken as many piccies as I could and devoted a whole post to the encounter ...

Off to read 'Cat of the Day' and Cheezburger, now.
One year on the Isle of Wight we came across a man taking his cockatoo, on his shoulder, and his rabbit, on a leash, out for excursions. Even on a bus, which we thought incredibly intrepid for the rabbit.

When we tried putting a harness and leash on our rabbit it went into 'dead' mode!

But I don't see why someone shouldn't take their kitten out for a walk. I've heard of cats which will go for walks with their 'owners', if not on leads.
I have a friend whose cat follows alongside when she takes the dog for a walk!!
I saw a cat being walked on a leash last autumn in Finchingfield. Apparently Bengal cats are most likely to tolerate it.
There's an old bloke in Deptford who walks his cat each morning. No lead or anything, the cat trots alongside him quite happily.

I think it's virtually a case of the cat taking the bloke for a walk.
Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.
Dogs come for a walk with you because they want to stay close to their "top dog" (you)
If your cat comes for a walk with you, it's because it doesn't trust you and wants to keep an eye on what you're up to.
I've seen cats on leads in Winnipeg and Edmonton, Canada. I believe that there is some bye law prohibiting roaming cats. Otherwise they are, essentially, confined to the house.

Back home, there is the chap who regularly walks his ferret in Covent Garden.
Came across a cat camping at Fairport's Cropredy Convention a couple of years ago. It seemed quite happy, and didn't wander far because it knew which camper van could be relied on to feed it.
And what about "A Street Cat Named Bob"...?
I find ferrets on a lead hilarious.
I think the kitten post won the count with the largest number of replies. Clearly, in order to please his customers, DG needs more kitten content.
I've always voted for more kitten-related content. I cannot think why DG resists.
