To be pedantic, the Snaefell cars do not use any form of 'ratchet', and work purely by adhesion. The centre 'Fell' rail is used only for emergency braking.

There is also a London Transport link. In the 1970s all the bogies were sent to Acton Works and were rebuilt there with more modern equipment. It was at this time that the Fell braking system was replaced, apart from emergencies, by regenerative equipment.
In the early 1970's I was studying Geology and Geography at the University of London. As part of a field trip to the Isle of Man I spent a couple of days measuring pebbles on the beach at the Point of Ayre. Fortunately there was no fog as I was right next to that foghorn. The highlight of the days was being kept company by a seal which greeted me in the morning and monitored my every move during the day. A lonely place.
