" His may not be a name you know," ....Oh, I think you underestimate your readership.

Please don't forget Essex Seaside postcards -there's the longest coastline among the counties (arguably: some put Cornwall first). I recall you've been to Canvey - but there are many many places of great interest on other parts of those shores....from Bradwell to Brightlingsea, Foulness to Walton...

(Not strictly south-east of London, I suppose, so fair enough, I guess...)
Your link "a delightful lift" takes me to the Ramsgate Tunnels site.
I hope the tunnels do reopen the tunnels as an attraction. Not sure how much interest there would be though, considering how many people go to visit the Chislehurst Caves, or the tunnels at Newhaven beach. However I think the tunnels in Dover attract some visitors.
I don't think George IV was particularly enamoured of Hanover, unlike his great- and great-great-grandfathers, Georges I and II, who were born there. Reading round the subject, it seems the journey in question was for his coronation as King of Hanover. Hanover had become a Kingdom during his father's reign - previous rulers had been Electors: a different twist on "one man, one vote"!

George IV's favouring of Ramsgate was partly a snub to Dover, which had recently given a raptourous welcome to his estranged wife, Queen Caroline.
Ramsgate is ok, they are in the same division as my team, Dulwich Hamlet. Down in the harbour (can't recall the exact name) there's a seaman's church, which has some good maritime stuff in it too. Rgarding going over to Ostende, is this still a route for foot passengers, or just if you've got a motor? Many, many years ago when I was still drinking, & pre-Euro, Ostende was great to get home from. The bars would convert any shrapnel you had from European travels, & so you could get pissed there on lira, marks, francs...whatever! A long time ago now, been sober for ten years....
Awesome post... full of intriguing history and little known secrets.

The links to Augustus Pugin seem like the makings of a major BBC Masterpiece mini-series. Genius architect driven to near ruin and madness... only to be buried in his own created church.

That Ramsgate Tunnel revival seems a bit of a stretch. Somehow it would seem unavoidably gloomy.

Of course your many transit posts get more comments, but that is to be expected.
If you would like tourist tips for Dartford or Gravesend I am more than happy to help!

..And also possibly suggest going to all the other places first ;)
