Splendid post - thank you.

For my understanding, does your reference to '..a day trip..' mean you managed to do all this from home and return to base on the same day..?
@Frank F
I'm sure that's exactly what DG meant. Curiously though, he bought a single ticket (£10) but makes no mention of buying a ticket back to London (for £10 or other amount).
The post's about how to get to Hill Top, so I only mentioned the single ticket (£10) there. I also bought a single ticket (£10) back.

And yes, the whole trip in one day...
   6am: Bow
   12 noon: Bowness
   1-2pm: Hill Top
   4pm: Bowness
   11pm: Bow
13 hours of travelling, for 4 hours in the Lake District? With the aim of securing a special postmark? Wow. It was lucky that the wait for the timed ticket at Hill Top did not derail your return journey.

Us Londoners know how to relax.
Actually 9½ hours travelling, with 7½ hours walking in the Lake District.

(the station's in Windermere, not Bowness)
Oh well played!

The beauty of train travel - unlike driving - is not a second needs to be wasted, whether you're reading or writing..or simply gazing out of the window at the passing vista.

Or taking a well-earned nap!
DG does a huge amount of advance planning to make full use of his time. A few months ago he squeezed an astonishing amount into a day trip to Manchester so I'm not surprised he manages to have a worthwhile day in the Lakes.

A lovely and unexpected post DG - thank you.
Oddly enough, the same day trip could be done by car. All you'd need is two drivers, to share the driving, and at least one other person, to have enough energy (physical and mental) to enjoy the Lake District.

I think I prefer DG's way.

And thanks for the fascinating description, all backwards and perfectly logical. And each of the various tips can be used stand-alone, unlike typical newpaper articles where you either do exactly what the writer did, or you don't (and if you don't, the article is next to useless).

The fractions issue is tricky. Not sure metrication would help much. Perhaps the walking public need a re-introduction to the furlong.
What the feck is that weird blue stuff in the sky??? We didn't see any of that in the two weeks we were there .... Remember Windermere fondly. The laundrette (about half way down on the left as you head toward the Lake) was a great place to dry clothes and grumble about the weather.
wow I never thought you'd go all that way to come straight back the same day ... glad you enjoyed it (and you certainly managed to wring the most out of your time) but there are much nicer places in the Lake District than Windermere
You had me at the Cartmel Sticky toffee pudding shop. Om nom nom, delicious (we have one in the freezer for emergencies!). Great post, we'll have to do this next time we're up there.
A day off in the Lake District? I'm taking a day off next week to visit the Edinburgh Fringe. Doable by train by using the Sleeper each way. Even more ambitious, I have twice taken the day off to climb Ben Nevis, and been back at work at 8am next morning!
