After 3pm and nary a comment! Surprised to see so many shops open on Friday (which I always understood to be the more 'holy' day in the christian calendar) and so many closed today. Surprised about Westfield!

you got me out the flat and to no3 on your list with an hour to go before closing. thanks.

Sunday trading laws require all shops above a certain size to be closed on Easter Day.

As for which is more "holy" - well, Christmas and Good Friday mark the birth and death of Jesus, and are certainly two of the four* most significant dates in the Christian calendar, but those life events happen to everyone - the events commemorated at Easter are what are supposed to make him unique.

Good Friday is, howver, the most solemn day in the Christian calendar

* Ascension Day being the fourth

Thanks Timbo; six years in a church school didn't seem to help me!

Never heard of the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising, must pay it a visit, thanks!

The only reason Easter Sunday sees no trading as it was a sop to the anti-Sunday trading lobby. Obviously there's not been any anti-Friday trading lobby, hence Good Friday has escaped as a day when you can shop like your life depends on it.

And I can tell you from my teenage years working for the long gone Food Giant supermarket chain, people really do. You'd be amazed at how many people go in to panic buy mode because the shops are shut FOR A WHOLE DAY!

It's probably not as bad in London where there are so many Tesco Metros etal, but I bet near my parents where the only supermarkets are huge ones, it will be!
