Luckily the poor kid won't know the meaning of 'vengefully'...

Nice one, DG.

A criminal record, several years in a homeless hostel/the street and nil income is just the thing to ensure disaffected young people get on the right path.

A 6am start won't be a problem for Kayleigh-Mae. She'll have been out on the streets all night and won't even have to bother to go home first (if she still has a home...).

Exactly DG. Because the alternative we've been pursuing for a couple of decades has worked a treat hasn't it?

The answer is, of course, even more money (isn't it always?). Larger benefits so Kayleigh-Mae's parents have even less reason to take a job and yet they will still be able to buy her the latest trainers so she doesn't have to go to the bother of looting them.

Cannot disagree with any of that post, DG, except that mixing kids of very different backgrounds is not going to work. I still do not like the Old Etonians I had to mix with in college.

And if people who are on benefit want to go out looting, why should the (fairly) honest (fairly) law abiding rest of us have to contribute to their upkeep? The threat of losing say 20% of their benefit for each conviction might just have a restraining effect. Certainly paying them full benefit has not worked.

The thing never to do whilst sitting at a desk is to have a knee-jerk reaction. Only you will feel the pain.

I agree with tintinhaddock.

Stern discipline and inflexible punishment is all this scum deserve.

This two-bit sarcasm is exactly what the Country doesn't need now.

good grief who let the trolls out?

Didn't the MP once say "Hug a Hoodie".

Sarcasm and humour is always needed.

For the avoidance of doubt my earlier comment was sarcastic. The sentences being handed out to many of the people involved in the riots are disproportionate and making families homeless because a young person has committed an offence will only lead to more trouble and will probably end up costing the public even more money. Some proper analysis is what is needed here.

Spot on post DG.
This is kind of what we have in my State, a fine and community service for kids aged 11-18 who are not living up to the the community or school citizenship standard.

My eldest is currently having to do an hour volunteering at the local food bank for each time he was late to class at school, and he has also has to pay $5 administrative fee to the school for each 4 hours he does! Definitely a deterrent. He is determined not to have to do that again! It's blooming hard work for a start.

NCS sounds like a step in the right direction, but don't make it seem like a 'holiday' for them, with fun activities like abseilling etc. That's fiving out the wrong message again. Our kids have to do it all year round in their spare time. It is a punishment and deterrent after all. It's not supposed to be 'fun'!

A good idea, but it's already being watered down! Be tough, people!

After reading the comments thread above,
I feel an urgent need to reintroduce this handy symbol - the DG 'flag of irony'.

I know you're being ironic. Good post today, DG! Spot on.

I saw David Cameron on TV making a speech about "moral responsibility" etc. Everything about him marked him down as an inhabitant of another planet.

At the end of the day, 95% of what happened was purely opportunistic. Despite knowing it was wrong, they thought they would get away with it. Just like politicians and expenses, newspapers and phone hacking, bankers and the constant repackaging of debt. If your going down the route of zero tolerance and heavy sentences, why does it only apply to the poor?

Chris

There was not zero tolerance for MPs over their expenses. And some of them are now in prison.

Outside of the U.K., the thing that I've noticed is that since last week there have been 'words of the day' - 'feral youth', 'scum' and 'Tottenham' all had theirs, were mentioned in all the blogs, forums I read on that particular day.. and none have helped whatsoever to push on the debate about what to do about it all..
All those righteous ones preaching here are also aprt of the problem..

p.s. today's word of the day was 'opportunistic'

Could we have a way of putting ironic flags on our comments too?

"Exactly DG. Because the alternative we've been pursuing for a couple of decades has worked a treat hasn't it?

The answer is, of course, even more money (isn't it always?)."

That's not an argument for this policy though, as there are more than two possible solutions to implement. Why not actually say why you think this policy is a good idea?

I think that this policy would be better if it was only for badly-behaved kids. Why punish the good ones?

DG your class warfare line is childish rubbish. These were shitty people doing shitty things because they could, because the police stood back. Consequences are needed and here they are.I don't want to live in a riot-torn shit hole, ruled by the mob and thats what your rubbish gets us.

Fantastic post DG! I actually deal with social policy in my real life and I can say that those who understand multi-causality, complexity and the need for considered responses that don't actually exacerbate situations / problems have their heads in their hands over Cameron's knee-jerk response and also over the narrow-minded, short-sighted, bigoted and downright stupid responses made by those who think that the Daily Fail is a legitimate media source.

There really are a lot of sanctimonious overprivileged bigoted knee-jerkers around here, aren't there? Never trust anyone who spells 'Country' with a capital C...
