Great work DG, congratulations on finding a formula that works for you - all the more important as you get older. I'm two months into a healthy-eating-and-gym routine and it is now showing results. Got a long way to go to match your impressive longevity though...
Sounds good to me. I've lost a stone and a half over the last three months through rigid calorie counting, and have been wondering how to keep it off without constantly logging everything I eat - I know my intake would slowly but inexorably creep up again. I shall adopt the dg method with alacrity.
Impressive. Doesn't work quite like that for anyone with body dysmorphia / disordered eating issues, which I know from experience, 'obsessive' being the key word. But good on you.
I've dieted on and off over the years and have come to realise this year that the simple act of weighing myself regularly seems to be the single biggest contributor to me staying on the right path. I used to do it weekly but often found the results hard to read - I've now moved to twice weekly (Monday AM & Friday AM) and it's been really helpful understanding how easily an unhealthy weekend can more than make up for a healthy week, and has helped me be a bit more sensible at weekends (whilst still having fun). Not sure I could manage daily but good for you - I can quite see why that works.
A timely post for me: in 6 months I lost 3 stone by the dg method, but the daily weighing has slipped off the radar recently and the weight was creeping back. Back to the daily scales and weight record: good timing and thanks dg!
"...check for the last for years..."

That's this month's typo spotted!
Seriously though, well done. I find my weight fluctuates roughly in line with the amount of stress I'm under at work. The more self control I need there, the less I've got when it comes to food. At the moment? I'm not going anywhere near the scales...
I cheated and bought some Withings body scales with built in wifi, which sends my weight to an app on my phone - very very sad. But I did loose over 3 stones in six months and have kept the weight off since. And yes I weigh myself every morning at the same time. One of the best bits of kit I have bought. My son did better and shed four stone.
If you weigh about 10 stone and run a marathon reasonably quickly, then you will burn about 2,500 calories. A pound of fat has about 3,500 calories. Eating less food has a much more significant impact on weight loss than exercise, but exercise will raise your metabolic rate for several hours afterwards. Exercise also suppresses the appetite.
Out of curiosity, how's the cholesterol after all that?

dg writes: No idea. I must've pleased them so much last time that they haven't invited me to take the test again. The fools.
That is almost exactly the same approach and philosophy I take too. I just write down my weight in my diary.

The regular weighing is crucial I think, because the extra pounds can creep up very slowly and it's easy to be complacent until suddenly you realise.. f**k I'm 4 stone more than I used to be X years ago.. etc etc.
The daily weighing regime works for me during weight loss. I think it helps maintain the mindset that what I eat eat and drink today is important and that cutting down shouldn't be postponed until tomorrow. Plus there's the positive daily feedback, and as DG says, the option to have treats (usually alcohol in my case)if my weight has dropped.
Well done DG. Some excellent tips there for those of us whose weight doesn't really fluctuate daily, but has nethertheless crept up a little over the years!
I do the same thing and also make a note in my spreadsheet - complete with my average weight over a ten-week period for that particular day, as well as overall to see if I am slowly creeping up or going down. I am happy to say I stay pretty much the same within about 5 pounds.
Good on you. I went puratanical for 6 months to reduce my cholesterol. I lost some weight (5 lbs) and have pretty much kept it off, but the cholesterol was unaffected. I donĀ“t want meds for a lifetime, so I just ignore it.
Good going D.G.! All that hiking about must be great for your metabolism.

I couldn't live without my daily bike ride up two steep hills.

So I wonder what's your take on this new 'Paleo diet' stuff? I'd need to monitor my cholesterol levels to find out if it really works, but from what I read they claim if you cut out the carbs and just eat proteins, you can eat 3 eggs a day and actually lose weight and have lower cholesterol.

But then these experts are always turning diet philosophy upside down every few years.
