Shouldn't that be the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club, to give it its Sunday name?
I don't recall seeing a person who thinks their newspaper needs a seat. Usually it is their bag that requires a seat, forcing other people to stand. I mean, you wouldn't want to sit next to a stranger on public transport, would you.
I know several people who have used the 493 bus to get to St. Georges hospital from areas around Richmond, so there is at least one reason to travel the entire route.
My mum worked at Ely's.

Er, that's it.
1) The R493 cannot turn right into Wimbledon Hill Road from Alexandra Road, so goes 'round the block' - the reverse journey simply turns left. All these roads are two-way with some banned turns. The one-way system is to the left, over the railway bridge, in the town centre proper.

2) Elys is now a collection of distinct businesses laid out to look like a Department store.
A route isn't necessarily high numbered because its new, the 272 dates from May 2002, 205 from August 2002, the 228 from January 2009.

The 493 number may have been chosen because it links Wimbledon and Putney Heath like the 93, or they just wanted a number ending in a 3.
When a route number gets up to 500, will it automatically become a trolley-bus route? I hope so.
Random bus deserves a random comment: I totally love your writing style DG :)

That Waitrose used to be an equally long and thin B&Q - the only local DIY shop until it was knocked down about ten years ago. The Magistrate's Court is almost right next door, so building next to the railway isn't exactly a new development. I don't know if there used to be sidings there or something, although considering the nearest pair of tracks belongs to the District line I suspect not.
I've been to the stock car races a few times and used the 493 on the last leg of the journey. I've visited mostly on perishingly cold winter's evenings or New Year's day. Its fun and far from expensive but parts of the stadium look less well cared for than the entrants for the banger races. Glamorous it isn't but I will definitely miss it when it goes. My next nearest circuit is close to Eastbourne.
Plough Lane doesn't, sadly, stage regular speedway any more, the last racing was in 2005. The stadium has a special place in my heart, as I had my first ever meeting as a speedway team manager there, for the Peterborough Pumas.
