Happy Happy Birthday. I'm guessing Barcelona. Have a great trip, wherever it is.
Happy Birthday DG! That means 48 is only 6 months away for me. Won't that be a happy occasion... yay.
Happy Bithday! Lemon meringue pie is my traditional birthday cake too ( I don't eat normal cake), preferably without the crust.
Many, many happy returns, DG. May you be happy, may you be well.
Happy Birthday!
As you're a train aficionado, I'm guessing a Eurostar trip?
Happy birhday DG.
Happy Birthday. 48! I can remember the post marking your 40th with a clarity that belies the number of years that has apparently passed. Enjoy your day in (hopefully) sunnier climes.
Wasn't that a melancholic post. Happy birthday anyway and have a good time.
.....the traditional DG birthday trip would suggest you're going south of the river, but I guess that's for another day.........
I'm sure you'll be around for more than another 30 years! Many happy returns.
Happy birthday, DG!
I wish you one happy return today, DG, and many more thereafter.
So a break in tradition and no bus 48 trip today?

My guess would have been a trip to France (Eurostar or better the Calais Train&Ferry offer http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=71963 ). But to a sunny place? Well, you should add the Calais trip to your seaside resort series sometime.

Happy birthday and all the best, DG.
One of the other scariest things about being 48 is realising that in thirty years time you'll quite likely be dead.

But probably not for a number of reasons.

You probably think of life expectancy figures but these are usually life expectancy at birth. You have already managed to reach 48 without dying so what you need is the life expectancy figure for someone of 48.

If you look at the major factors you score well. Only the occasional alcohol drink, I cannot believe that you smoke and we know you have or at least had got your weight down.

Statistically you postcode probably counts against you but that is probably misleading as it suggests poverty and it is well-known that poverty and ill-health are statistically related. Also that you are single but that is often thought to be because it then becomes too easy to give up on life and not get out and be fit and active - can't see that somehow.

If I were a betting man I would lay decent odds on you being only half-way through your life. Trouble is I am older than you so don't rate my chances of picking up my winnings.
Happy Birthday DG!
Happy birthday DG!
Happy Birthday and here's to getting a day younger every day.
Happy Birthday DG. Hope you have a lovely day wherever it is you are going.
Happy Birthday DG, have a great holiday!
Have a lovely birthday DG.
A very happy birthday!
Eurostar, then No 48 bus from the Louvre to Porte des Lilas? or the Bourse to Ukkel?
Happy birthday, DG! Enjoy your trip.
Very happy birthday DG. But is it really you?? Has your blog been hacked by someone who is going abroad? Happened before once I seem to recall...Iceland I think? Time to change your password and access codes? Enjoy the sun... (and it wasn't melancholic either!!)
Happy birthday and many happy returns. You a positive factor in the lives of so many people. Thank you.
Happy birthday DG!
Happy birthday DG, hope it's a good 'un! That explains the 00:48 posting time of your first article today...
HB DG

Enjoy Eurostar and visiting foreign climbs. No 48 bus in Lille but there is a 48 in Paris and Brussels but not a double decker ;-)
Many happy returns. Have a great day, and come back and regale us with the details.
Keep up the great blogs. I am one among many who enjoy them.
Happy birthday, DG! Having now made it to almost a year after my 48th birthday, let me reassure you it's just as good as the year after your 18th - better, in fact, as you now have a much better idea of stupid things to avoid doing. Hope you get some lemon meringue pie, or something equally good, for dessert tonight in whatever sunny clime you're off to.
Happy birthday DG. Have a lovely break
Many happy returns and have a great day, wherever you're off to.
Mine next weekend. After 51 they do get a bit samey: perhaps the biggest feature about this one is that I was born in '57 and this year I'll actually be 57. [Oh. Plus the fact a friend is coming from abroad to see me. Which is as good as going away.]
Happy birthday DG. I also reckon you'll be going somewhere using the Channel Tunnel so guess either Paris, Brussels or possibly Cologne.
Happy Birthday DG. Have a great day and enjoy your trip.
I'll be 48 in July and I'm certainly planning to live more than another 30 years. Another 48 would be about right.
I wish I were a young nymph of 48 again! Have a good trip.
@RogerW: if it's your birthday next week and you were born in '57, then surely you'll be 56 ? Have I woken up in 2014 ?
Happy birthday, DG! Hope you will still do the 48 bus trip. I well remember in the mid 70s walking across Hackney Downs every morning to catch it to work.
Happy Birthday DG! Hope they have lemon meringue where you are going.
48. Still just a child.
I'm 68 and it's bloody great. No getting up for work at some Godawful time, no mortgage to pay, bus pass (and if I lived in London I would have a Freedom Pass).
As long as you've got reasonable health and enough money to live with a couple of quid left for fun old age is nothing to fear.
Enjoy your birthday.
Gratulerer med dagen DG
Happy Birthday, DG.

Bruges?
I'm sure you will have picked some where you'll have enjoyed and whereever you have been I'm sure we'll enjoy reading about it tomorrow. Hope you had a good day.
Wishing you a fab day and a super year ahead. All the best buddy
Cxx
48 is the telephone country code for Poland but I am not sure that fits with the sunshine clue...
Happy birthday DG, hope your trip abroad as good:)
and happy birthday from the other amber, looking forward to reading about your trip
@Paul. Thank you. No, I really mean it: THANK YOU. After spending the whole of the last year believing I already was 56, it's great to find I'm younger than I thought.
Happy birthday dg - maybe we will have crossrail 2 by your 78th birthday
A very HAPPY BIRTHDAY dg...jeeze, you're too young to be getting maudlin. You can keep it up for at least 37 more without a bit of bother..I have. Garth
Happy birthday!
Thanks everyone!

I have somehow been awake for 20 hours of my birthday, and have now returned from a splendid sunny time abroad.

A memorable one :)
I'm sure there's room on your shelf for a belated greeting. Here it is then. A belated greeting. All the best - til next time.
Hello DG,
a second belated Happy Birthday from Germany!
In thirty years time you'll be on the 78 from Shoreditch to Nunhead!
Bon Anniversaire.
Happy belated Birthday - looks like you enjoyed your day trip to Paris!
