Trinity Buoy Wharf do a really good free colouring/activity book for kids - you just ask for it at the gatehouse. We go there quite regularly and would certainly recommend any opportunity to get on the lightship which is used for photo shoots. We went one Open House day. Worth looking out for community events there too. One of my kids took part in a Newham based community production of Benjamin Britten's Noye's Fludde in the Chainstore.
DG, in an almost frightening example of synchronicity today the Robert Elms show on BBC Radio London were discussing this very area in the "notes and queries" spot. A chap who's currently working on Crossrail in Canning Town rang in to ask why there's a riverside promenade, complete with lighting and benches, accessible by a spiral staircase from the station but currently closed off. Turns out it was built in anticipation of a pet food factory becoming flats, but that hasn't happened yet.
That riverside promenade leads, via a footbridge over the DLR, to the entrance to Bow Creek Ecology Park. The gate at the far end is locked, and the path is increasingly overgrown. It'd be nice to think Newham will open up this remote route once the City Island bridge opens, but I fear not.
The waterside path was built as part of the Jubilee line extension, but LUL never allowed access through the station. It finished where Crossrail is now, which was just wasteland (old Thames Ironworks), and looked really smart in 1999!
Still wasted, apart from Crossrail staff going to and from work.
You can walk the perimeter of the Ecology park. But sadly when you get to the end, you reach another locked gate onto the same riverside promenade to Canning Town. So you just have to walk back.

I've used the bench under the DLR at the end of the park as a place to eat a sandwich for lunch. You face a CCTV camera and a closed off "nature reserve area". It's one of those cameras where you wonder if anyone's watching given the stella and red bull cans lying about. Naturally I had to climb the fence and wander in the closed off area, but you can't go far.
