And for 2012's challenge you have to travel at least 1 stop on every regular (M-F or better) TfL bus service ;-)

I'll let you off the school and mobility bus routes!

I'll admit I was amazed by how gloomy the Heathrow stations were. I'd expected something a *bit* nicer, at least.

Heathrow Express does own one Class 360 train (the Heathrow Connect type) which is supposed to be for the T4 shuttle only, as you experienced. I have taken it to T5 before though, so there's always a chance you get the non-fancy train. Which I prefer, since it lacks the gloomy lighting to match the stations.

Mill Hill East is the only station on the tube that I've never been to; hopefully I'll make it there soon to complete the set. It'll only have taken me 37 years!
I have though visited quite a few which are no longer tube stations; apart from the East London line pre-Overground, I went to Aldwych, Ongar and North Weald before they closed in the 1990s.

You could of course sit in the quiet coach where Heathrow Express TV isn't played.

And, those in the know never buy HEx tickets from the stations, but buy in advance where discounts of up to 50% are available: it may be more expensive than the tube, but if your office is positioned close to Paddington (as mine is), I'm there an awful lot quicker.

I completed every tube & DLR station last February, after starting in November 2000. There again, I do live 250 miles away and only visit about 3 times a year. Back in Jan to do the Stratford International extension. All the Best DG.

Reasons to visit Mill Hill East? Not Waitrose or the Virgin Active gym - but walk up the hill to the Ridgeway (not quite as far as Mill Hill School in Mill Hill village itself) and you'll find the Adam and Eve pub which is good in a gastro pubby kind of way without being extortionate - and there are some good walks across to Totteridge if you hang a right from there.

Why 274 stations (not the normal 270)? What are the four extra ones?

That's true, LU do claim 270 stations at present, although it isn't as clear cut as it may appear, there are grey areas. For example, there are 2 Paddingtons, 2 Edgware Roads, 2 Hammersmiths, and yet Bank-Monument is a single station.

The 274 is a mystery; for purposes of the Tube Challenge, there are 270. There are two Paddingtons and Hammersmiths (despite only one being shown on the map), and both Edgware Roads (as shown on the map); Bank and Monument count as separate stations.

So I too am wondering what the other 4 stations are!

... was also going to mention the 270/275 thing. it is 270!

snd indeed, if you haven't done Bayswater, check that you've "done" the District/Circle Paddington as well...

next year? Abandoned/Disused stations, surely. as part of Totally Tubular week! :-)

Oh go on then, 270.

In which case that's all 270 (or 269) stations now duly visited, kerching!

It's good to see you've completed your challenge. Well done DG, and I hope you have a great New Year! :-)

It depends on what you define as a "train journey": if you count the Tube, then the most expensive journey surely has to be a non-Oyster single from Leicester Square to Covent Garden, which will be a blistering £4.30 next year to go all of 250 yards.

Then again, there's no point to actually do that journey, when it takes longer to get down to Tube level and back up than it does to walk.

Well done. I don't think you've ever failed to meet a challenge you've set yourself, but this was cutting it fine! Happy New Year DG

Wishing you a Happy, Healthy 2012. Thanks for your blog. Long may it continue!!!

Happy New Year DG! Will you reveal the mystery count in 2012?
:D

"One mile beneath the runways" - you're exaggerating, surely!

As the mother of the most tubular man in Britain, I must congratulate you on this magnificent achievement, It's the sort of challenge I could do, the other one is just to exhausting to even contemplate. I did a dozen stations with him once, that was enough.
