I was very tempted to have a wander up onto The Greenway myself, but finally decided just to watch it all from the study window whilst leaning against the warm radiator, and like you DG I was surprised at the amount of light pollution.

The "switch on" was covered live on ITV's London News, it was amusing to hear Boris saying, -after the switch on lever had been turned on and the lights were slow to come on,- "Push it harder", surely he should have been advised that the lights had a warm up period.

They did mention that the lamps are only temporary as after the Olympics, assuming football moves in, a roof is to be fitted over the seating.

I think someone may make a good profit selling umbrellas during the Olympics.

I thought they might have had the big switch on at 20:12. They obviously missed a trick there!

Goodness, so that is what that eerie white glow in the northeast sky was last night... I was on my way home and couldn't for the life of me work out what it was. So confirmation here that the glow can easily be seen from Wapping/the river (E1/E1W).

I did think yesterday that 20.12.2010 would be a great date to do something related to the Games : )

Oh to have the balls to tell the policemen not to take photos at it represents a security risk... If only someone had...

So, unless "any 2012 athletics final run beyond summer twilight" these temporary floodlights are all about the opening and closing ceremonies and nothing else?
Well at least the Pudding Mill Elephant will be all white on the night, eh?

Lmao! How spectacularly pathetic!
