Didn't you take a dip?
I thought of going there yesterday but assumed it would be very busy so spent the day riding buses instead.
You said the building was warm, I hope the water was too as most UK indoor pools are too cold for me and I do not stay long in the water, also do not like the smell of chlorine, maybe they have a different purification system at the Olympic pool.
Free admission for spectators good, but £2 for a cup of tea!.
Looks well worth a visit.
John,
I'm with you on pool temperatures. It must have taken a lot of energy though to get 10 million litres of water up to a comfortable temperature. Perhaps the building is designed to conserve this heat well.
Avoiding the chlorine-type smell; that depends largely on all swimmers holding on to their urine until they get out of the water!
I doubt if it's as simple as that. There's lots of other things that come from other people's bodies into swimming pool water, which suitable chemicals can help to protect us from.

The said chemicals do not always have to smell of chlorine, though. But that could also me a matter of cost.

I'd really rather talk about the new pool though. It does sound good, and as DG says, it's good for East London to get something back.
Urine is probably not the main factor when deciding the chlorine amount. Unless you have a urinary tract infection it's sterile when it leaves your body.

As for temperature: What counts on "comfortable" depends on how vigorously you plan on exercising. Like any other cardio sport e.g. running, if you feel comfortable at the start then you'll soon be overheating. Instead the ideal conditions feel cold when you're at rest, so that you're comfortable by the time you're out of breath.
Agree with Jim on pool water temperature. Used to swim at two different pools in Birmingham, one was lovely resting in it nice and warm, while awful once exercising. The other pool was cold when I first got in but great once I'd done a few lengths.

I'm looking forward to going up to aquatics centre and happy that it is the same price as my local Tower Hamlets pool. Unfortuantly I don't think I am quite at the 100m swim standard for the main pool, I can only do. 50m without stopping.
Guildford leisure pool is noticeably warmer than the swimming the other side of a glass partition. Leatherhead pool does not use chlorine, not sure what it uses.
1. You add chlorine to the water to get rid of that smell. That smell is not chlorine.

2. Urine is sterile when it leaves your bladder, it is not sterile after passing through some dirty tubes on the way out.
Love your photos. What a stunning piece of architecture, inside and out.
I was there this morning. Very impressed. Also good to see the crayons again in the Olympic Park . I thought the staff on duty were very co-operative. You could get your picture taken with the Olympic torch. Easy access for spectators from Westfield , unlike during the Olympics when there was a long diversion over 2 bridges and a 200 step climb (for some).

Sounds like I'm wrong on this one.

I don't agree with this one though. I know what chlorine smells like, and swimming pools smell like it too. For example, it's the same as the smell of bleach.
Looks like a good place for train spotting too, and a warm one....
Links have been shown between asthma in children and use of indoor swimming pools. Amines in sweat and urea in urine combine with chlorine to produce more powerful irritants, chloramines, Nitrogen trichloride and more complex congeners. And also in pool attendants asthma is more common. The problem is worse the more urine is released into the water.
"a decade of inconvenience"? June 2007 to 2013/14 is 6-7 years. And what inconvenience?
Orbit lit up tonight.
My son is gagging to get into this pool, judging by some comments he may be gagging when exiting it too! :o)
Went to renew my GLL swim pass for over 60s and was told that the promised free swimming that was to continue after the Atherton closed, would not be honoured. We've been without a pool for years now.So much for "sporting legacy".It's our local pool in our own borough but it seems that the London Borough of Newham have split from GLL.
