There's a webcam at the South Pole.

"provided convincing evidence that local residents have both pride and considerable time on their hands."

They can't be that proud if they're carefully nurturing bloody French Marigolds. Wretched common things.

Glebe School used to be called Hawes Down School. It is in Hawes Lane. I went to the infants and junior school and it never occurred to me there could be any double meaning to "Hawes Lane" - until we went house hunting. Mrs P was adamant that nothing on earth would persuade her to live in a house in Hawes Lane. It was ages before I finally twigged.

Another fascinating series of posts. Well done!

Brittany? Not unless it takes a bloomin' great dog-leg in the Channel. I think you'll find it runs from Normandy to *near* Lourdes (not through it). If you want to cross the water as close as possible to the Meridian, then take the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry (although it would stick closer to the line if it went Newhaven to Le Havre).

It doesn't really run right through the centre of Lewes either, but up towards the western end of town, crossing Western Road right by the imaginatively-named Meridian pub.

But that's pedantry on my part.

dg nods: Post adjusted, thanks.

Great stuff, DG. When I was a flat dweller, the elderly couple next door had downsized from Park Langley, the first time I had heard of it. He was driving a car at 88 and she was still running, quite improbably, a shooting club. Terribly posh, but terribly nice people too.

Most interesting. Have added the addresses to my sat nav and will explore when in the area. Thank you.

P of P - there is still Hawes Down School, Glebe School is different although it is right next door!

Note to self: My photos of the meridian south of Greenwich have had far fewer viewers in a week than my photos north of Greenwich got in a day. Indeed, far fewer viewers than any other set of photos I've ever posted. Which surprises me. Probably shouldn't.

@Embo

I didn't know that. The photo on the Glebe School link is of a building that, when I was a little boy, had Hawes Down junior school on the first floor and Hawes Down Secondary Modern on the ground floor. During my time there new buildings were constructed for the junior school which is what I presume is still called "Hawes Down".

I used to fancy a girl from Park Langley. She was very posh.
