Staggering in its opulence, but the restrained beauty of, for instance, the Taj Mahal is more impressive in my opinion.
Wonderful pictures, very clever to get there on such a quiet (yet apparently dry and bright) day.

I recently heard on the radio about work going on to install air conditioning at Versailles. The programme was critical of the damage allegedly being done to some historic parts. The large number of visitor apparently expect a better ambience than French royalty were forced to tolerate.
The air conditioning may be needed because the place is rather more crowded than it was in marie Antionette's day. This is also the problem the Sistine cahpel has.
Historic places weren't planned with tourism in mind.

Not only do people generate heat - but all that breathing makes the air damp, its becoming quite an issue because these places are much easier to reach nowadays.

This is even an issue with preserving modern stuff, as the plastics, paints and glues deteriorate.
A cracking set of photos - excellent!
