The citizens of Bedford did well not to reveal the identity of "somewhere in England" during the BBC's occupation in WW2. I suppose that the many public posters during the war warning people to "keep mum" and "careless talk costs lives" had an affect.
In peacetime, recently, on a smaller scale many of us who had seen previews did not disclose details of the Olympic Opening ceremony last year. So sometimes the public can be trusted!
I see from a link on your blog that the late Glen Miller USAF bandleader has a museum named after him in Bedford, I wonder if you will visit that one day.
Bedfordshire County Council made new signs for every town village in the county in 1951, and many of them are still around. Growing up, a few decades ago, I thought every place had them, because almost everywhere I went did. I only recently learned how lucky I was.
Lots of Edward Bawden work in the Fry Gallery in Saffron Walden too (he was one of the - nearby village - Great Bardfield set - interestingly, Grayson Perry spent part of his childhood there too, albeit somewhat later, and I know an old boy who claims that GP delivered his Sunday papers).

A marvellous place to visit if you've not been, and free entry. The Bridge Gardens just down the path from it is also rather unexpected, and the Saffron Walden Museum is also worth a visit.

I went to school in Bedford so had the compulsory visit to the Cecil Higgins museum which I remember nothing about except it's near a pub I subsequently drank at. At least I now know what Moot Hall is, I'd always wondered.
