Queuing for ages after being at work all day and then being turned away at the polling station door is almost beyond belief. No wonder people are livid.

Fascinating, bewildering, confusing, annoying, both guilt-and gut wrenching with a little bit of sheer frustratedness added in at the lack of the countries electorate to see past the two party system.

Jacqui Smith is gone.
O ring out the bells... maybe there is a deity somewhere after all??

I must express my thanks to the people of Barking for giving a me a reason to say "Yes!" when I woke up this morning and switched on the radio.

Well, the results are pretty much as I predicted. I expected a hung parliament with the Tories as the largest party. Nonetheless, one can't deny that it's been a fascinating election. As for people being denied their right to vote, it's clear that something needs to change in the way the electoral system is managed. My bet is that there will be legal actions being taken as a consequence of this.

Andrewh,

Here in Australia we hold our elections on a Saturday which means the demand gets spread out more evenly across the day.

We also have an elected Senate and alternative (aka preferential or instant run-off voting) both of which seem to work well.

Please don't assume that those using postal votes are doing so for reasons of laziness. There are many more legitimate reasons to do so!

I can't believe Hazel Blears got back in. WTF happened there?

Ah. Maybe some votes were counted twice. :-)

I'm sure DG won't be too sad to see that Gorgeous George failed to get elected, giving him more time to do whatever it is that he does.

Odd how a Lib/Lab pact based on share of vote is a clear majority, but a Lib/Lab pact based on first past the post doesn't cut the mustard by a long chalk.

Re: Hazel Blears - if they put the red rosette on a pig in Salford, it would get in. (And some would say, it did.)

She was the best-looking of all your candidates.

Rushanara, I mean, not Hazel Blears. Well that's obvious.

I'm glad Erith is getting all this publicity, especially as I was helping the campaign yesterday, but it's bizarre that it's being called the seat that confirmed the hung parliament. The result was announced at about 5.30am but no-one seemed to notice until 9.40am. Ditto with Old Bexley and Sidcup, though the Bexleyheath and Crayford result got through ok. Would love to know what communications meltdown happened!

Your analysis of Cameron's threadbare olive branch is spot on.

Sheer desperation here.
Conservatism is back, and I am sure that the Countrys electorate (well those who could vote anyway) will look back on that days sad work and bitterly regret voting for Camerons cronies.
I am absolutely sure that Thatcher, the vile twisted evil Queen of the Conservatives was cackling into her dribble bib and laughing at the way that certain council house tenants (those who are lucky enough to actually have one of those after the theft of the nations social housing by her) elected to be represented by a billionaire playboy in a campaign financed by a billionaire tax exile Lord.
Oh yes, multimillionaire old Etonians will be so quick to look after their own and legalise the hunting of wild animals with dogs again, enjoying their pain and revelling in this inhumane 'blood sport' and leave you and me to suffer the financial fallout from their election.
Start weeping children of England, for you will find that the arms of your beloved country have been wrapped overnight in barbed wire.

*Puts plans to emigrate on hold*. After years of Howard's neoliberal rule here I feel for you Brits living there. I have the passport but I'll be staying in this hemisphere for the time being. It looks like we are all in for interesting times, however.

I hope, Mr Geezer you didn't fall alseep at the crusial time when the (newly Dommed) Dark Lord Ashcroft deigned it worthy to give an interiew to the BBC.
It was sweet to see that his millions couldn't buy an absolute majority.
