I did not realise the source of the River Wandle was there. You have posted nice picture of the ponds
In the summer I sometimes travel by train to Sutton get lunch in the large town centre supermarket. Then from nearby bus stops it's easy to get to semi-countryside.
Ah, excellent! Was intending to pop down once it reopened. I hope the knitted ducks stick around a while, they're lovely.
It's *a* source of the Wandle. The other is over in Waddon. It's a fairly nice walk between the two as well.

Little Holland House is another nearby "attraction" (open once a month) that's worth seeing if you're already in the area. A gorgeously decorated Arts and Crafts home done mainly by hand.

I live in Wallington. And yeah, I'd rather be in Carshalton. Guess which one's cheaper though. Though Wallington does have the bigger park in Beddington Park and a high street that's worth a damn. It also has the dubious pride of being the centre of the local Hundred. (Wallington Hundred, of course) See: http://www.epsomandewellhistoryexplorer.org.uk/Surrey.html
I remember that Flying Caps game, although not the Victorian version and it was Flying Hats by the late 60s. I suspect my brother and I spent more time in seeing who could make a hat go furthest than playing the game properly.
Ah ducks: the only Jubilee project I've seen that has a scrap of wit.
Ducks are great - I love them.
@ allotment queen, so do I, and so do kittens, who would love to play with baby ducks if they had the chance.
Sutton is boring compared to other boroughs. As a resident, I hope it stays that way to keep the tourists off our patch. zzzzzzzzzzzzz!
Talking of local history, I thought it worth mentioning a rather good programme on BBC2 last night, The Secret History of Our Streets, which was an in-depth and intensely personal recent history of Deptford High Street. Next week is Camberwell Grove, and I think Arnold Circus/Boundary Estate is also to feature in a future episode. Recommended.
I remember playing an original game of flying caps as a child and seem to remember there was a small brass cone inside the tip of the cap that made its flightpath more direct.
Love the knitted ducks.
I used to live in Sutton and Cheam, so will be please to go and see this. It always was a lovely area around the ponds for a walk. Not boring at all! As hard up pensioners we are always on the look out for free entry and good tea rooms, thanks for this info.
We are just back from visiting the museum. Thanks for the info it made for an interesting morning. Having a cup of tea by the pond was lovely too with a heron swooping around. Please note Sutton is not boring, it has plenty of lovely parks and loads of history if you look for it.
Hey, I remember the Flying Hats game too.

So that's a least three of us then who'd also be asking the "nice lady at reception" for access to the toilet.
