Wow, the site does update at 7am precisely!

Distinctly British? Maybe not. The Belgians seem to think that this sort of thing is their specialism:

This one is worth visiting just for the building.

Surely the word "cartoon" is a lot older than the 1840's ? It originally meant a preparatory sketch. 17th century painters would have drawn a cartoon prior to painting their masterpiece.

dg writes: Agreed. I've replaced "introduced" with "appropriated", which I believe is more appropriate.

I went a couple of years ago when they had an exhibition on the Dandy and the Beano. I will have to remember to pop in again sometime soon.

I went there three or four years ago for a Heath Robinson exhibition and enjoyed it very much. And bought something in their gift shop.

This is a place that I'll visit the next time I'm in London. There's some very dear childhood memories to relive.

I always assumed this was just a shop ... thanks for the enlightenment!

I went for the wonderful Steve Bell show earlier this year, although I unfortunately didn't have time to explore upstairs. If you're a Bell fan and in the area, it might be worth popping in to the shop to see if they've any leftovers - I purchased a delightful Royal Wedding mug.

Satirical cartooning is a very British thing, with a long and distinguished history from the likes of Hogarth and Gillray. Gillray in particular was wonderfully crude & bawdy, full of rude contempt of the powerful of the time.

As you enjoyed the Cartoon Museum so much, I would recommend the Private Eye at 50 exhibition at the Victoria and Albert.

Went today and loved it, does get crowded though and there are no signs directing you to it, nor is it on the maps. You need to ask at the information desk, they gave me directions too but I can't remember them or the route I took.

The exhibition is free and open from 10am-5pm.

Ooh didn't know about that one, so thanks! Will probably be wasted on my (American) kids especially as we shall miss the Dr Who exhibit, but it'll be nostalgic for me!

Thanks to your tip-off, I did exactly the same thing at exactly the same time (and paid exactly the same amount), so we might have crossed paths!

Not many people know the Dandy is still going - it's getting very hard to find in newsagents these days - but I'd advise anyone who spots a copy to buy it, at least for your kids if not for yourself. Desperate Dan looks nothing like he did in the 60s (and this has been the source of many uninformed and frequently just plain wrong foaming diatribes by "Daily Mail Reporter"), but by all accounts kids love the comic if they can get it, and I personally think it's better than it's been at any point in at least the past twenty years, especially its infamous fortnightly "Xtreme" magazine incarnation which lasted from 2007-2010.

(I'm not being paid to say this BTW!)
